The name "Midland" came from the word "mida", meaning "middle." It was first settled by Texans in 1845 and named for Major James Midler, who served as acting governor of Texas in 1846. The city's first store opened on October 16, 1845. The first post office was established in Midland on November 1, 1846. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Midland became part of Confederate General John Buford's brigade and surrendered to Union troops on December 12. On February 17th 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant arrived at MIDLAND with his army and burned all the stores within sight before withdrawing to Fort Worth
