The Midland Airforce Base, located in Midland, Texas was founded on July 16, 1947. At the time, it was the largest air force installation in the United States and also one of the most important military installations in Texas. The base currently has over 350 active duty members and is home to more than 100 Family Support Centers and other units that provide support to service members and their families. The base's history can be traced back to World War II when Midland was a bombing range used by the U.S. Army Air Forces. After the war, Midland became an air force station where pilots could train for combat missions. In 1957, Midland became one of five such bases created as part of Operationwide Nightliftman which aimed to improve air traffic control in metropolitan areas during night hours. In 1969,the wing responsible for operations at Midland AFB were renamed The Ninth Air Force and moved from Colorado Springs, Colorado to Midland AFB after changes in Tactical Command structure caused by Vietnam War hostilities. Midlanders have served our country with distinction since World War II through various branches of service including infantry (1941-1945), armor (1946-1950), artillery (1951-1959), bomber (1958-1965), fighter interceptor (1966-1970), electronic intelligence reconnaissance squadron (1971-1977) and rotary reserve unit numbers 1 through 12(1978). Currently there are more than 350 active duty members assigned at MAFB who contribute to every aspect of our mission: training aviators for warfare; providing logistical support; monitoring airspace; conducting joint exercises; providing safety services for citizens; assisting with emergency response tasks statewide;homeland security activities;andresponse forces during peacetime events such as natural disasters or terrorist threats

Midland AFB has been host for a variety of military exercises throughout its history including Operation Desert Storm in 1991 and Operation Noble Eagle in 2002-2003. It is also known for hosting ceremonies such as America's Birthday and Christmas Tree Seasons each year.
Midland is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. Midland is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. It is located on the Red River and forms a border with Wichita County to the north and east. The first Europeans to enter what is now Midland were fur traders from Canada in 1823. They named their new settlement for John Crain, who had purchased land east of present-day Wichita Falls in 1821. At that time, Wichita County was part of Mexican Texas. In 1836, when Mexico lost its independence from Spain, Texans in Texas organized as a state and created Wichita County as one of its easternmost counties. The community at what is now Midland originated as a post office called Clarendon; it was renamed for General Sam Houston on October 17, 1840. The town went through several name changes before settling upon its current name in 1851 after surveyor James Southerton's purchase of 640 acres (253 hectares) near present-day Midland on the Red River for $5 per acre ($/km²). Development began immediately; Southerton donated water rights and built grants of land to settlers who would build homes or ranchos around his home base known as "Souterton's Prairie." By 1860, there were 1,500 residents living within what are now Midtown Heights and White Settlement areas adjacent to Southerton's Prairie; by 1870 those proportions had increased to 3200 residents within three miles (4 kilometers) of downtown or Sigma Square .
