On July 1, 1941, the United States Air Force was activated with the goal of providing for aerial support of country's military and civilian efforts. TheAAF became operational with the establishment of the Second World War. In 1946, it was determined that air forces should be assignment-based, so on Aug. 1, 1947, Headquarters USAF announced plans to deploy Gift History units as a part of Tactical Fighter Command (TFC) in order to provide strategic bomber cover for land operations against Japan. On Dec. 12th 1951 TFC moved its headquarters from Langley AFB Virginia to Eglin AFB Florida; this move allowed gift history detachments and analytical centers located at both locations to work side by side under one roof. The first Gift History detachment deployed as part of TFC occurred on May 6th 1952 when elements from 3rd Bomb Wing (later 4th Bomb Wing) arrived at Eglin AFB for staging and debarkation ceremonies aboard USS Intrepid (CVN-7). The detachment consisted of Colonel John Pappas commanding officer (CO), Major James Fenton commanding sergeant major (CWMG), Mr. Royce Lunsford mechanical engineer (ME), Corporal Floyd Semenenkogt intelligence analyst/communications specialist/photographer/ enlisted member George Weismanen photographer/dance instructor and Sgt Leroy Ziegler physical therapist/. After participating in an Operation "Mole" mission over Korea conducted by Far East Air Forces using Boeing B-29 Superfortresses aircraft piloted by LtCols Rufus Epps and Donald Cookson RAF respectively; it Detachment detached again on Nov. 15th 1952 upon arrival back at USS Intrepid maindeck after engaging in combat flying off USS Princeton during their Korean War campaign against North Korea - which ultimately resulted in the death or capture of Kim Jucheng who had been residing within South Korea since early 1950). It is important to note that all detachments were commanded by Colonel John Pappas CO until his retirement in 1984 following 25 years service with the USAF including 22 years as commandant general stationed at Wright Patuxent National Park Airport where he also served as vice president for research & development for Lockheed Martin Corporation - a position he held concurrently with hiscommanding officer role while stationed there. A total of 17 Gift History Detachments have been Deployed thus far during our nation's longest active conflict!
