The first post office in Mesquite was established on November 16, 1881. The name of the town came from a still extant stand of mesquite trees that were located near its original site. Pioneer David Hogg and his family had been living on what is now Elmendorf Road when they decided to name their new Rancho Las Colinas after one of their friends and farmhands - John Fenton-Milner. In 1882 Hogg's son-in-law Wm Stephenson bought another piece of land adjacent to where Elmendorf Road crossed Red River; this land became known as Mesquite Creek Valley. On May 5, 1886, Mesquite Townsite became a City under Act No. 640 approved by the Texas Legislature on December 12th of that year.Fenway Park Historical Society.
