Mesquite, Texas is a small town in the county of Nueces, located in south-central Texas. The population was 5,584 as of the 2010 census. Mesquite has a large Hispanic and Latino population. The city is home to the Dallas Cowboys football team and other major league sports teams. The name Mesquite comes from the Apache Chief's words "mesa" meaning "ridge" and "xoque" meaning "thornbush." As early as 1836, David Epps noted that mesa country near present-day Mesquite was already inhabited by Indians. In 1839 A.J. Beasley reported finding cottonwood trees at what is now the intersection of Pecos Road and FM 19606 (now I-10) on what he called Rancho de las Aguas Calientes. A&P Cottonwoods acquired this land in 1886 when they purchased Rancho Rio Grande from José Antonio Durazo y Zúñiga for $5,000USD Mesquite first became an agricultural center with cattle drives bringing new settlers to the area during cattle rustling days in the 1840s. By 1870, Mesquite had become one of Ozona County's largest towns with over 2,500 residents and it boasted its own schoolhouse, post office and hotel which still stands today. Many aspects of life in this small town were controlled by ranchers; such as zoning laws which limited development to ranching areas only According to historian Edwin Meese III: One reason ranching dominated life was that both men who owned land could hire gunmen protect their crops while also enjoying free range access to all sorts of animals including horses, burros and mules used for carrying goods up onto ranges or down into irrigation canalside settlements; these activities generated profits sufficient enough for men like John Lubbock Sr., founder/owner (1853–1937) of Amarillo cattle empire [to] put his money into stocks rather than invest it directly in local enterprise." In 1898 Rufus Wiman organized a group known as United West Texans who tried unsuccessfully to purchase some acreage north of downtown where they would build a town named after themselves but foundered because no farmer wanted his property subdivided . This led organizer Wiman to develop plans for what would later be called Mesquite In 1902 James Bowie formed Bowie Mining Company with Jerald Crain , Charles Goodyear Jr., Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid among others interested in silver mining on newly discovered Katahdin Mine property about 12 miles northwest of Mesquite along US 81A nearpresent day Anadarko area . When news leaked that economic conditions were improving outside Denver Colorado so prospects improved within Bowie Mines company decided not to rush into production until better times returned . They produced less silver then had hoped but made more money selling output back east .. This example shows how business decisions could have significant impacts on communities ." With increased transportation access due principally to railroads coming through Nueces County during this time period there was increased trade throughout much of Southwestern Texas

Mesquite, Texas is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 581 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. Mesquite was founded by pioneers in 1836 as a trading post on the Brazos River. In 1845, Mesquite became a county seat and it remained so until 1903. The city of Mesquite was established in 1907 and grew rapidly due to its agricultural production. The city's growth stopped when World War II began and the war diverted resources from agriculture; however, new industrial development has resumed in Mesquite beginning in the 1990s. The first white child born in Mesquite was born to James Crain and his wife Susannah Hackett on October 10, 1839, making it one of the earliest towns in Midland County. James Crain had come to Mesquite from Illinois with his family during the early 1830s as part of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas wagon train headed for Texas. He soon found success founding a grocery store and becoming an important member of local government before dying at age 71 years old in 1865 while serving as mayor of Mesquite. His son John Crain took over operations after his father's death and continued expanding the business until 1924 when he sold it to Roy Lee who operated it until 1985 when it was purchased by Jerald Vanneman who operates it today under the name "Vanneman's". In 1904, George Wirtz donated land for what would become Baylor University which moved into its current stadium that year; mesquite trees were also planted on this site as part ofthe university's initial landscaping plan. Mentioned prominently in Baylor University history are football great Bear Bryant (1912-1973) and basketball coach Phil Knight (1947-present). As college enrollment increased following World War II (Baylor became one of America’s top universities), so too did demand for housing outside downtown mesqite limits which caused many homes built near campus during this time period to be replaced with more recent buildings over time including Hargrave Hall which now houses Rice University’s School of Veterinary Medicine & Health Sciences complex; originally built as apartments for East Side students prior to their purchase by Rice University – see photograph above right dating back to 1981 . A numberof other notable civic organizations were founded or changed hands during these years including: American Legion Post #1 (now known as Veterans Affairs Medical Center); First Baptist Church; Methodist Episcopal Church South (now Trinity United Methodist Church ); Boys Club; Chamber Of Commerce; Masonic Lodge No 353 ; Women’s Club;; Prominent citizens associated with mesqite include Judge Roy Bourgeois (1892-1976), Dr Pepper Snapple Group Vice President Dale Earnhardt Jr.; ranchers George Wirtz (1893-1971)and David Ladd(1920-.2004); both men are buried at Arlington National Cemetery . Manufacturing businesses located within or near mesqite boundaries included: Alcoa Aluminum Company Pte., Texaco Inc., Westinghouse Electric Company, Gulf Oil Refining Company,. After World War II ended there were no major projects announced or completed withinmesqite boundaries despite large numbers of veterans being repatriated throughout Midland County Many small businesses continued operating even after larger companies left town such as Gourd And Glass factory where locally made glass still is produced
