It is also the home of The University of Texas at Mesquite (UTM), one of the largest research universities in the United States and one of the ten campuses of Rice University. The first settlers to what would become Mesquite were Mormon missionaries who came West in 1851. A post office called Mesquite was established in 1853, and remained operational until 1901. In 1886, mesquite became an independent townsite when it was annexed by Dallas. In 1907, Mesquite joined forces with Arlington and Richardson to form Richardson-Mesquite Corporation which built and operated a large water system forDallas and Richardson Counties. The company later became known as United Utilities Company. The city's namesake comes from General Sam Houston's 1799 Expedition that traveled through Midland on their way downriver to Santa Fe: "Humble Portion" refers to this early settlement near present-day Interstate 10 west of downtown Dallas; "Humble" means "unsophisticated." From 1916 until its annexation into Dallas in 1923,mesquite served as headquarters for both DPS (now TXDOT) and DYLAN Electric Light & Power Company before becoming UTM's parent campus in 1961 with all property being transferred from DPS to UTM including golf courses, hospitals, shopping malls etc.; making it one of only two American universities with a university campus outside Chicago/US Cellular Field!
