Mesquite is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. Mesquite is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area and is the county seat of Midland County. The city is located on the west side of Interstate 10. The first written mention of Mesquite was in 1827 when it was spelled "Meskuit". It may have been named for Captain James Cook's ship HMS "Mesisquit", which anchored off the coast of present-day Mesquite on November 13, 1792 while exploring what would become Mexico City. Captain Cook's party suffered greatly from a marauding group led by José Antonio Aguirre y Gasset that day and they were forced to abandon their supplies and leave behind everything but cannons, water jugs, and a few clothes. Because there had been no recent French exploration or settlements in Texas before 1792, this event became known as the Spanish Occupation of Texas (also called Louisiana Purchase). Although not much is known about early Mesquite residents other than some oral history anecdotes compiled by later generations, it seems likely that many people from nearby Arlington arrived during or after 1836 when Houston annexed Midland County including most of what are now mesquite neighborhoods. In 1846 Stephen Fenton purchased land east of downtown from Thomas Henderson for $2 per acre ($40 per square mile). This original purchase formed what would eventually become University Park on today's north side of town. On July 4th, 1856 common school students from all over Midland County gathered at Fenton's home across College Road south of town to celebrate his birthday with open enrollment which began Monday morning September 1st Aided by Mr. Fenton himself we built our first brick building on Main Street just east side School Road facing Hardenburg Avenue.—This marks the foundingof Baylor University North Side where graciously Mrs Elizabeth Kline presided until her death in 1893.—During this time Grange Halls were also established on present day Elmendorf Drive (now Old Fort Worth Rd) northwest corner Milligan Drive near IH 35W & FM 360W

Mesquite was founded by families of Spanish and Mexican descent in 1874 as a small farming town on the banks of the Trinity River. The community grew rapidly during the early 20th century due to its location near railroad stations and its access to agricultural land. By 1930, Mesquite had become an important cotton producer and served as a center for oil production during World War II. Today, Mesquite remains an industrial center with a rich history and diverse economy.
Mesquite grew up on a farmstead in central Texas. The family was originally from the northeast United States, and Mesquite learned to say "Texan" when he was just a child. He attended Baylor University before entering the Marines in 1967. After two years of service, he came home to take care of his parents while they recovered from an illness. When he turned 18, Mesquite enlisted in the Army as an infantryman and served in Vietnam until 1969. Upon his return home, Mesquite worked for several years as an accountant before getting his law degree from Southwestern Baptist University in 1973. He then started practice Lawyer #1 at the same location where he currently works. In 1978, Mesphalt married Jane and they have two children: Austin (born 1984) and Katherine (born 1990).
