Mckinney, Texas is a town located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest municipality in Texas and the third-smallest city in Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area and is also one of its six original cities. The first settlers in what would become McKinney arrived from Tennessee around 1836. The town was founded on a ranch near present day junction of I-35 and Loop 410 by brothers John A. McKinney and James Witherspoon McKinney, Sr., two of eleven children born to Scots immigrants Donald Alexander Macdonald and Angelina (née Williamson) MacDonald who had originally landed in British Columbia as part of the 1857 Vancouver voyage. After years of farming, cattle driving, trading post operations, and Namesake Day processions through downtown McKinney on April 14th each year since 1876 when James Witherspoon McKinney Sr.'s great grandfather Don McMillin laid his claim to land east of Uptown that became home to what would be known as McKinney after him – this event being commemorated annually with a processional parade down Main Street which attracts thousands each year – they opened their first store on July 15th, 1881 at Fourth & Elm Streets just south of today’s intersection with I-635/410/Loop 610 (now Thalia Boulevard). In 1899 they built their first frame building on current site #1010 Elm Street; later they added a second store on opposite corner #1100 Elm for convenience until 1915 when both stores were replaced by One Stop Shopping Center which stands today (2005) across from FM 620 / Loop 610 East inside Town Hall Park across from US Highway 290 adjacent to Mckinney High School (1920). On January 1st 1870 John A. McKinney married Anna Hargrave – daughter of Captured Mexican General Antonio Garcia Hargrave who had been held prisoner at Fort Sill during the American Civil War before being released and moving west along with his family overland to Round Rock Texas where he homesteaded 2 miles ENE Round Rock then made improvements including organization into adobe buildings called Rancho Santiago de los Reyes Milagros or San Gabriel Mission House while Anna raised five children there including future Congressman George Pemberton McKnight III who also attended San Gabriel Mission House as did future mayor Henry Byington Hodges whose mother served as school teacher there during her early childhood years before coming to live nearby at 402 6th St SE - now home to several restaurants including El Riojo’s Cantinawine & Tequila Lounge having been moved here following courthouse fire damage done by arsonists in 1906 when local merchants tried unsuccessfully to reopen under new ownership; [1] hence “Old Hickory Place” but variously spelt "Hickory Hill" "Hodgesville" "Milagros", etc.; finally becoming just "Mckinley" beginning with 1945 annexation by DFW resulting in hyphenation). After many failed attempts starting about 1880 via petitions signed by citizens up until 1902 because no one wanted property east of downtown taken away for highway construction purposes it was decided that an election should be held so that people could voice their opinions about whether or not they wanted a street running through downtown named after them instead like City fathers had done for other small towns throughout America prior thereto such as Council Bluffs Iowa (1890), West Point New York (1892), Burlington Vermont (1894), Scranton Pennsylvania (1900), Joplin Missouri (1902) - all times referenda accepted without objection thereby validating those decisions once made! So an election was held on November 3rd 1902 using balloting machines purchased from Knoxville Tennessean newspaper company [2] results shown herein: Arthur Linton won hands down 50% plus 1 vote against challenger Willis Jennings 53% + 1 vote! It wasn't until 1935 when Interstate 35 bypassed downtown causing businesses alongMain Street between 4th Ave N&I-635 & Elm St NW (& Hooker Rd.) closed forever due to lack Of suitable alternate business locations available so another attempt was made via referendum voted upon March 31st 1935 resulted in reopening Main Street between 4th Ave N&I-635 & Hooker Rd./Thalia Blvd.– thus resurrecting what is now known as "Before Downtown". In 1836, African Americans were brought to Texas by General Sam Houston. They worked in the fields and cattle drives until 1861, when they became a part of the Union army.
