It is part of the DFW– Arlington–Arlington Heights CBS regional television market. The city was founded by John F. Kennedy and his brother Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy in 1911 as a small community called Kinston on the Trinity River near Fort Worth. In 1926, it became a town when it was annexed by Fort Worth and its adjacent villages of Richardson and McKinney were incorporated into Mckinney on January 1, 1927. The name "Mckinney" was given to it because cattle raisers from McLennan County used to drive their herds into what is now Mckinney for pasturage during summertime and then return home after taking delivery of their animals at McKinney's stockyards before continuing on their way downriver to Wichita Falls or San Angelo where they sold their meat. The first post office opened in McKinney on October 12, 1925; it closed permanently on February 27, 1951 due to low mail orders from residents living outsideof town limits during that time period. In 1946, President Harry S Truman issued an executive order creating the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area which included Mckinney as one of its five original areas within that authority; this area had a population of 2 million people at its peak in 1950 which had increased to 5 million by 1970 when portions of surrounding counties were added to the metropolitan area).
