In 1836, James F. McAllen founded the town of Mcallen in what is now Texas. The town was named after Captain John A. McAllen who fought for Mexico in the Mexican-American War and died at the battle of Palo Alto on April 6, 1846. The town was first established on a land grant from Gov. Antonio López de Santa Anna and it grew rapidly due to its strategic location within easy striking distance of San Antonio and its water resources. In 1845, the Republic of Texas was formed and Mcallen became part of the new state. By 1850, the population had reached 10,000 people and by 1860 it had swollen to 25,000 people. Growth during this time led to problems asMcallen lacked access to education or basic infrastructure such as roads or water supplies which limited development opportunities for residents. As a result of these limitations, industrialization began to take hold in Mcallen which caused social unrest and eventually contributed to its decline in popularity over time. Today, only a few remaining businesses remain in downtown Mcallen despite predictions that it will see renewed growth over the next decade thanks to annexation by neighboring municipalities The first settlers in what is now Texas were primarily Scottish immigrants who arrived around 1795 looking for land grants that would provide them with livable conditions with transportation options into California (and beyond). Most Scots chose not to settle down permanently but instead took up ranching life where they could improve their herds while also enjoying some degree of independence from British rule throughout much of North America (the exception being Alaskan Alaska).
