Marshall, Texas is a small town in the County of Tomball in the state of Texas. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–Sugar Land metropolitan area. The community's name comes from General Robert E. Lee who fought for its incorporation into the United States as a town in 1872. Marshall was originally named "Faireland" after Fayetteville, Arkansas which had also been incorporated into the United States that year and renamed "Marshall". The post office name change came about because mail delivery to Marshall was slow due to its remote location. In 1894, when Sherman Hinton donated land to form a new town near present-day Houston, most of what is now Marshall fell within his gift and was annexed byHouston on March 24, 1896. In 1951, when Sam Rayburn became Speaker of the House of Representatives and changed how congressional districts were drawn in Texas, he chose to keep Marshall as an all-white township with a black trustee instead of moving it down one electoral district like other towns in his district - an example followed throughout much of Texas during this time period where white lawmakers would move black residents out of white working class neighborhoods so they could be reclassified as “minority” residents (due to their race). This strategy worked well for Rayburn until he died in 1998; then many more black residents moved into Marshall because they found it easier than move away from Houston or some other city they knew well. When Hurricane Katrina hit Gulfport on August 29th 2005 and destroyed much property along Bayou Teche including homes (including those built by Sam Rayburn) within days after landfalling there were few if any structures remaining standing amongst all areas touched by Katrina outside levees/floodwaters across Mississippi River Basin In late 2007 local media reported that Marshalls planned to build a shopping mall off I-10 known locally as "The Mills" which would bring jobs and tax revenue to their community but later collapsed amid allegations that developers received bribes from local politicians while building the mall Today Marshalls still contains several businesses closed since Hurricane Ike struck September 2008 including two oil refineries that stopped production following Ike due to damage done by Floodwater & lack of access roads .....the only store open now& employs 3 people

It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area and is included in the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land Combined Statistical Area. The name "Marshall" comes from General James Marshall who fought in Mexico during the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. Representative from West Virginia and Mayor of Huntington, West Virginia before moving to Marshall. The first European to visit what is now Marshall was Alonso de Portocarrero who landed there in 1543 on behalf of Hernán Cortés's expedition against Mexico City. Spanish traders established contact with Native American nations along both coasts of North America soon after their arrival but no permanent settlements were established until 1845 when Antonio López de Santa Anna founded San Fernando de Acre (later Austin) as an provisional capital for Coahuila y Tejas under Mexican rule following his successful coup d'état against French rule in that year. A period of growth followed which saw Acre become one of Mexicali's most important commercial ports and serve as a center for Anglo-Mexican trade through connections made with British traders working through Francisco Pérez de Fuentes y Ojeda;[2] however, Acre also experienced turmoil due to indigenous uprisings and civil strife culminating in its evacuation by Mexican forces in 1847 amid violence surrounding efforts to establish an independent Texan republic.[3][4] On 4 February 1850, Midland Railway began service between Austin and Corpus Christi via San Marcos (now San Marcos Municipal Airport). This allowed goods traffic from Odessa downriver to reach Brownsville before travelling north overland through Nacogdoches into Galveston County; this mule train route continued until 1966 when Interstate 10 was built making it impassable for wagons or trains.[5] At that time, freight traffic shifted to trucking;[6] today rail remains a major transportation backbone serving local employers including oil refineries,[7] agriculture,[8][9][10] manufacturing,[11][12][13][14], medical care[15], shopping centers,[16]: and agricultural bulk shipments headed southward across Addison Road Bridge into Corpus Christi Bayou
