Marshall, Texas is a small town in west-central Texas. The population was 4,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The community was named for General James K. Marshall, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. Senator from Missouri. The first store in Marshall opened in 1872 and remained open until 1957. At that time, it was the only store in the town and its population consisted of settlers and farmers who raised livestock and sold goods from their homes or barns on Main Street. In 1907, Marshall developed into a strong agricultural center with over 100 farms producing hay, cotton, corn, wheat, potatoes and other crops. In 1945, during World War II (the war to end WORLD WAR II), Marshall served as an airbase for allied forces conducting bombing raids against Japan; it remains one of the few American towns to have been used as an airbase by both sides during World War II. Marshall was founded in 1879 by Capt. John Marshall and his wife, Sarah. The town grew up around the Marshall Lumber Company, which built a railroad to the town in 1881. The company relocated to Temple, Texas, in 1895 and eventually ceased operations. The Marshall Lumber Company building is still standing and is currently used as a museum. The town also has a couple of churches, a grocery store, and two businesses that still operate today: the Marshall Museum of Art (founded 1976) and the Marshall Bank (founded 1902). Marshall is located just east of Austin on FM 620. It's also home to Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library and Museum.
