Marshall is a small town located in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,774 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Antonio–Brazos Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community is named after General James B. Marshall who fought in the Mexican-American War and then became a U.S. Senator from New Mexico which included Marshall in its boundaries. The first people to live here were veterans of the Spanish-American War who had come down from Texas to find new land and start anew. They founded a trading post on what is now US 281 and traded goods with Native Americans before settling into farming communities around modern day Marshalltown, TX and crossing US 181 into East Texas when it was opened for travel by President McKinley in 1901 (on May 10th). After World War I many soldiers returned home to rebuild society here; they founded churches, schools, businesses and other institutions that helped make Marshall an active community during the 1920s through 1940s as oil production increased statewide and industry spread to nearby El Paso and Wichita Falls. The original town site was located just east of present day Marshalltown on the banks of Buffalo Bayou (now Buffalo River) where cotton plantations once stood and grist mills used white water power to produce flour for local grocery stores until railroads came along and took over this sector of economy starting in the late 19th century; these structures still remain visible today near US 281/EFWY road junction about one mile east of downtown marshall proper across Robert Wagoner creek Bridge No.(?) In 1881 voters approved incorporation as a village under Southwestern Railway Company authority with two plazas - "New Market" on Main Street(now corner FM 671) south of First Baptist Church(1861), north of present day Third Presbyterian Church(1915) - although platting began no sooner than 1882 since lots were not sold until after organization due to lack thereof due To problems inherent with railway infrastructure at that time (village residents paid tax assessed at 20% rate while company received 50% occupancy tax). As early as 1888 there were plans for erecting what are now known as Post Office buildings on current site including jail which served a dual purpose jail/prison from 1892 thru 1916 when state penitentiary replaced it following construction of more permanent facility adjacent westward on Sabine Pass Road between Farmers Branch & Houston Railroad Yards; several residences also were constructed along brick PW line north side RR tracks next door (between Main & Buffalo Streets), but all except one have been demolished or renumbered since closure or demolition ditto for Post Office building [first] mentioned herein; 1st mentioned herein reopens 7/3/90 currently occupied by First Baptist Church w/ associated churchyard features With growing petroleum production becoming increasingly important throughout much southern U S Marshalls oilfields dating back prior to 1915 boom many citizens bought adjoining oilfield parcels parcels totaling 333 acre blocks while others leased surface rights holder's rights tracts amounting totalling 375 acres making it possible today even without drilling permits or knowledge some men have developed large profitable shale gas operations 600 feet below ground
