Marshall is a town in Stafford County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stafford County. The town was founded by General Sam Houston in 1839 and named for him. The first post office in Marshall was established on December 12, 1840. On May 10, 1845, it was renamed to Marshall after James Fenton Marshall, an American general who served in Mexico during the Mexican–American War and as commander of Fort Buena Vista onates River. In 1885, the town incorporated as a city under its own government which lasted until 1907 when it merged with nearby Decatur into the new city of Dallas effective January 1, 1907. The exterior of Marshall Municipal Hall can still be seen today inside the old city limits of Dallas (now MidtownDallas). When Dallas annexed Marshall in 1907 it also added some pre-existing homes from Sherman Oaks eastward along Elm Street between Union Station and US 75/I-35W provide what is now known as "Marshall Heights". The original City Hall building has been rebuilt multiple times since then including an addition completed in 1978 which houses offices for both cities combined now called "Marshall Annex" After annexation by Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex in 1992 most all local functions were outsourced to DPSA's downtown area through agreements made with other agencies such as firefights over control of municipally owned parks etc., making Marshalls Main Street feel more like a small town again
