In 2011, a new retail location was opened inside former US Cellular Headquarters located at 3759 Eldridge Parkway inMarshall which serves as both an outlet for The Marshall Coffee Company and a headquarters for their sales and marketing efforts. Today, there are over 20 employees working at The Marshall Coffee Co., including eight brewers who strive to create each cup of coffee with precision using only local beans and water from sources within 5 miles of downtown Dallas. In 1827, Captain James Kenedy used Wacoonah Creek as a staging ground for his cavalry charges against Native Americans living along the riverbank south of present-day Austin. After Kenedy's victory over these Native Americans, some settlers began calling their new community Marshall because its central square resembled that from which Kenedy had launched his assaults. By 1879, however, most people in Marshall had adopted English namesakes such as John or Harry instead of Wacoonah Creek because they felt that this name would be more likely to stick with them after their town achieved some level of notoriety among those who frequentedDallasand other partsofthestateduringthattime.(1) The first white settler to arrive in MarshallsouthwestwardfromWacoonahCreekwasJohnMarshallin1879.(2)John Marshal arrived at what is now downtown Dallas from Wacoonah Creek on March 3rd.,1879.(3) He named his new town after himself - Marshallsville - after spending time traveling through Illinois looking for land to purchase.(4) At first only 250 inhabitants lived in Marshallsville; this increased greatly when cotton shipping began arriving at Dallas from Louisiana via Galveston Bay during Reconstruction(5). By 1881 local merchants had built up enough infrastructure to support 2,000 residents; by 1886 Marshall had become one ofTexas' leading agricultural centers due to its position near two major beef ranches (Benton & Slaughter). This growth in agriculture led to an increase in trade betweenDallasandMarshall; by 1893 merchandise transactions totaled $2 million per year.(6) During World War I military production skyrocketed due to America's need for munitions; by 1917 local businesses were able to generate $10 million worth of sales from military contracts alone(7). After World War I ended Marshal experienced another period of rapid growth thanks largely to heavy investment by various oil companies operating thereaboutspurchasingeverythingfromfarmlandstoindustrial equipment(8). However starting around 1930 things slowed down considerably as petroleum prices plummeted and industry consolidation took place throughout North Texas(9). From 1978 until 2003 Marshall underwent several rounds Of Urban Renewal which saw many jobs brought back into the city thanks chieflytothe constructionindustry(10). These days aspectsofMarshallsouthwestwardoriginallyknownasWacooneriverfrontageare still visible today although much less developed than when they were first established:(11), primarily owingtothefactthatoilproductionhasdeclined significantlysince2003.(12)
