The Marshall Army National Guard was activated on Dec. 15, 1935, in Marshall, Texas. The unit was originally organized as the 9th Infantry Battalion, a regiment of the Texas National Guard. On Jan. 6, 1936 the battalion became part of the 1st Infantry Division and deployed to France in World War II as part of General George Custer's "7th Cavalry Regiment." The division fought at Normandy and Operation Cobra before being redeployed to Germany in 1945. The 1st Infantry Division returned to the United States in 1946 and re-activated as an infantry brigade under command of General George Custer's old divisional headquarters in Fort Worth. In 1951 it became an army reserve brigade and participated in several Korean War deployments before disbanding on Nov. 1, 1960.

The Marshall community was founded by Texans who migrated to Williamson County in the mid 1800s. The first post office in Marshall was established in 1892. In 1922, Charles W. Cooke opened the first general store in Marshall and service station on County Road A1A. In 1932, Hennepin Oil Company constructed an oil refinery on Jacksboro Road just south of town. Marshall, Texas is a small town located in the U.S. state of Texas on the Edwards Plateau. The community was named for General James A. Marshall, an American general during the Mexican–American War and one of the first military commanders in Texas. The population of Marshall at the 2010 census was 1,711. The town has a rich history dating back to 1845 when it was founded as a stop on stagecoach routes between Houston and Fort Worth. By 1870, Marshal had become a thriving center for cattle ranching and agriculture with many businesses including a bank, mercantile store, Methodist church, schoolhouse and four hotels serving travelers passing through the area. In 1907, Marshal became part of Baylor University's new city Limits campus after Baylor purchased land from Waco businessman Elisha Kenedy Sr.. The university built two large dormitories inMarshall which remain extant to this day – Bachelor's College Tower (now known as Dormitory 102) and Graduate School Tower (now known as Dormitory 103). In 1959, following the passage of the John F Kennedy Presidential Executive Order #9210 creating Pershing County,[1] Marshall voted to become its seat of government. That year also saw significant growth when Baylor constructed its new medical center in nearby Glenn Park[2] which would serve as one of Baylor's main campuses until it moved to Plano in 1993. In 1984, Marshalls first high school graduating class completed their curriculum at Plano High School before moving into their own facility across from Glenn Park Medical Center.[3] today Marshall High School offers both middle and high school students opportunities for graduated students to pursue undergraduate or graduate degrees whilestill living in Marshalls community atmosphere! By 1860, Marshall had a population of 1,500 people and was known as one of the leading mining towns in Texas. In 1881, Marshall became the county seat of Cameron County after it was named for Gen. Robert E. Lee, who had served in Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The town prospered until World War II when it all but disappeared due to bombing raids by the United States military. Today, there is only a small portion of Marshall remaining that is still inhabited by its original residents.
