Marshall, Texas is a town in Brown County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,429 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Greenville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in Marshall was established on November 15, 1879. The current post office building was built in 1928 and has been used by the Marshalls since then. The name "Marshall" comes from Colonel George Marshall's home in Alexandria, Virginia which was named for him. In 1881 Marshal became the county seat of Brown County after it was moved from Ozona to that location. In 1890 Marshall had its own school system but it merged with the Amarillo public schools system in 1907. In 1924 the town annexed rural land east of town and erected a dam on an irrigation canal to provide water for agriculture while also creating a small community called Golden Valley which served as both community center and recreational area until 1985 when it closed due to lack of funding. A new courthouse was completed in 1930 and has been used by the marshalls ever since including during World War II when it served as a military base camp for troops arriving at Fort Worth Army Air Field. After that time it became an administrative headquarters for all county government operations until being mothballed in 1984 due to budget cuts. In January 2009 ownership of the building reverted back to local officials after years of speculation over who would take control given that no one wanted to renew or maintain what had been described as "a decrepit relic". A $5 million dollar renovation project began immediately afterward and is now complete with updated technology including air conditioning and dishwashers inside the old courtroom as well as exterior paint work done against original plans which included paneling made out of asbestos-containing materials which caused health concerns among some residents through exposure over time such as when children played outside without proper protective gear). On October 1st 2013 Marshall voters passed an ordinance legalizing marijuana dispensaries within walking distance of all municipal buildings like libraries, fireplaces etc., providing further impetus behind this development which should see dispensaries pop up throughout town starting around 2018 or 2019 depending on how things play out politically (the approved zoning allows locations near movie theaters too).
