The Mansfield Texas Army Garrison was founded in 1872. The unit served in various campaigns during the American Civil War, most notably the Battle of Chickamauga. After the war, the Mansfield Garrison was disbanded and its members transferred to other units within the army. However, it re-established itself as an active force in 1925 when it was reactivated as a cavalry regiment. In 1940, this regiment became part of the 1st Cavalry Division and participated in World War II. After the war, the 1st Cavalry Division was disbanded and its members were transferred to other divisions within the army. However, it re-established itself as an active force again in 1984 when it became a brigade infantry regiment. The Mansfield Texas Army Garrison has since been dissolved and its members have been transferred to other units within the army.
Mansfield, Texas is a small town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Texarkana metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1875 by John Mansfield and his wife Catharine Beecher Mansfield. Downtown Mansfield has a Carnegie Library, which opened in 1912 and is now used as a museum. The original courthouse building sits on the square downtown. Other buildings include the old post office (now a restaurant), two banks, and four churches: First Presbyterian Church (1875), Second Presbyterian Church (1897), Methodist Episcopal Church (1912), and Baptist churches (1927). In 2009, Mansfield had its first tornado outbreak ever recorded with three tornadoes--two that were rated EF0/1and one that was rated EF3/4--all within an hour of each other! MansFIELD ISLAND is located approximately halfway between Bastrop and Dallas on FM 3596 about 10 miles west of Amarillo and 25 miles east of Wichita Falls. This Talishtian sand bar island has been known by different names over time including Pinnacle Hill Island, Brushy Point Island, Hiland's Hornet's Nest or Birdie's nest due to its location about midway between these townships on Sheppard Channel about south of Bastrop according to local legend According to oral tradition from early settlers who lived nearby during the 1800s it was once home to 300 waterfowl which included Bald Eagle’s eggs as well as many Bar-headed Goose’s eggs however this information comes from written records dating back to 1893 when Lubbock attorney J.H Waddell visited this area while working for railroad company he notes “the nests were destroyed by people hunting waterfowl so I am not sure if those numbers are correct†As late as 1910 there remained only 20 waterfowl remaining on the island however By 1915 there had grown to 150+ birds living on the island however nesting stopped due primarily to depth restrictions caused by retreating glaciers over time

Mansfield experienced significant growth in the early 20th century, thanks to its location at the crossroads of several steamboats routing traffic through the Trinity River Valley. In 1924, Mansfield became the county seat of Williamson County, Texas. The town’s economy shifted from agriculture to retail trade during the postwar period, while its population declined in recent decades due to declining coal production and suburban development. Despite these setbacks, Mansfield is still one of the most important localities in Williamson County today. The history of Mansfield begins with General John C. Breckinridge who arrived in 1879 onhorseback after leading an expedition against Santa Anna's forces at San Jacinto Battlefield. Breckinridge was later elected governor of Texas and served two terms before becoming president of Baylor University in Waco, TX. He married Elizabeth Swanton on October 12th, 1881 and together they founded what would become Mansfield-basedBreckinridge Cotton Mills Company Limited (BCM). BCM became one of the largest cotton mills in America and played an important role in developing textile industry throughout SouthwestTexas during the late 19th century and into the early 20th century. In 1924, when Williamson County was created from portions of Dallas County, Mansfield became its county seat due to its strategic location at one end ofthe county along Interstate 10 while other towns within Williamson County were located more north or south along I-10
