The United States Air Force deployed gift history in Mansfield, Texas on December 8, 1946. The deployment was made to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Midway. The gift history was organized by Colonel John W. Akers, Commandant of cadets at Lackland AFB. Midway Day is a day that is celebrated by the USAF and its allies worldwide as a reminder of the decisive victory over Japan during World War II that ended the war and preserved Allied hopes for world peace. On December 8, 1946, General George C. Marshall issued Order No. 398 which ordered all United States military services to celebrate Midway Day with appropriate ceremonies and activities across Continental US Forces. In commemoration of Midway Day's anniversary, Father Stephen J. Neumann delivered an address at Lackland Air Base highlighting how airpower had played a significant role in defeating Japan and helping build democracy in Asia after World War II. In addition toGeneral Marshall's order, gifts were donated from many individuals and businesses throughout Texas including cattle ranchers, oilmen and other businessmen who contributed money or goods for local community projects such as highways or schools; merchants who donated items such as radios or clothing; farmers who donated horses or tractors; nurses from Great Lakes Hospitality Group who provided hospitality during American military campaigns in Europe; school children from Mansfield Elementary School who created Giving Days posters for their classrooms; and residents of Mansfield Municipal Airportwho gathered materials for a display case displaying memorabilia from Operation Mainbrace-the first major USAF exercise conducted in Mansell County since Japanese surrender).

In 1962, the Texas Air National Guard's 191st Fighter Wing deployed a gift to Mansfield from its member state of New Mexico. The wing flew two F-86F Sabres from Grand Junction Municipal Airport in Colorado for Operation Desert Shield, participating in Desert Storm. The 191st Fighter Wing transferred two more F-86Fs to Mansfield in 1997 as part of the wing's conversion to the F-16 Fighting Falcon. The unit has also donated aircraft parts and engines to other air forces around the world since then.

The first Europeans to visit Mansfield were in 1827 when Captain John Fenton and his party of five men set out from San Antonio on horseback to explore the new Territory of Texas. They discovered an uninhabited region full of big trees and wide rivers that they named "The Wilderness." In 1836, George Rogers Clark traveled through Medina County on his way from Austin to Mexico City. He stopped at Mansfield for lunch and ordered a hog farmer to prepare him a pig's head with salt and pepper because he had never tasted anything like it before. Back then, pork was considered a delicacy in most parts of America. Mansfield was founded by Andrew MansFIELD on October 2, 1872 as an agricultural community located east of present-day Fort Worth. The name honors General Sam Houston who donated $3,000 for its founding and also helped lay the cornerstone for what would become Mansfield High School (now Baylor University). At that time, only three people lived in downtown Mansfield: Mr. White (the postmaster), Mrs. Klingensmith (a dressmaker) and two girls working at home - Sarah Akinsley and Alice Greenough.
