The USS Enterprise (CV-6) was the first ship to be built at the shipyard and she was launched on April 15, 1945. She served as a unit of the Navy during World War II and sailed to Japan in early 1945 as part ofOperation Cartwheel. The Enterprise also participated in Operation Crossroads and transported troops to Okinawa during the Battle of Okinawa. On October 15, 1945, she collided with another vessel while transiting through Japanese waters and was damaged beyond repair. She was sold back to the Navy on November 10, 1945 and decommissioned on January 5, 1946. The Enterprise's sale became final on January 5th because her hull had already been removed for use as part of a new destroyer class that would serve in Korea. The USS John F Kennedy (DDG-8) was commissioned at Lumberton on February 3rd, 1946 and served in Korean War service until she decommissioned on September 2nd, 1951.
Lumberton is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. Lumberton is located on Highway 281 south of College Station and northwest of Waco. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lumberton was founded by men from Logano, Texas in 1872 as a small Progress station on the banks of the Trinity River. The first store in town was built by A.J. Farley and Jno. Hamerman and opened in 1873. By 1880, there were nine stores in Lumberton with a population of 350 people. Passenger traffic on the Santa Fe Railroad increased when it reached this point from Baylor University Station (now Waco). In 1886, Lumberton had its own school district which included both public and private schools including Episcopal First School (1888), Academy School (1892), Mrs John Fenton’s Home for Girls (1893), Lumberton Male/Female High School (1901), Lumberton Female-Male Intermediate High School (1903) and Timberlake Junior/Senior High School (1906). In 1907, lumbermen formed an association to promote trade among themselves and other localities near Wichita Falls due to lack of transportation along that section of the railroad line between Wichita Falls and Lockhart Junction then known as the "Great Western". The group became known as "The Association" or "The GAWA." In 1912, lumbermen established a mill village north of Lumberton called Millersville with what are now FM 527/US 290 Spur serving as its main street running east-west within mill boundaries while another road ran southwest to connect with I-35W just west of present day downtown Lumberton proper via US 290 Spur which continues into today's business district northeast of Main Street near Walmart HQ building; current day Elmendorf Mall runs along one edge or border thereof In 1916 construction began on what would become Central Methodist Church; services were first held at Brushy Creek Baptist Church before moving to their new facility that year In 1923 construction began on what would become McLennan County Courthouse; services were first held at Montgomery Elementary before moved to their new facility that year On July 1st 1930 property lines between McLennan County and San Jacinto County were finalized following countywide consolidation so all land east or west of US 71 became partorized with San Jacinto County . On February 15th 1931 voters approved proposition #2 resulting in incorporation ordinance being passed establishing a borough government within Lumberston Township with Mayor Ewing presided over by five trustees who also served as City Councilpersons until 1954 when they were eliminated after voting out mayoralty twice while retaining only three memberships per quorum . Incorporation ceremonies occurred on March 3rd 1931 with town seal designating incorporated area bounded by Hastings Road NW / Old Lovers Lane NE / Red River Rd SE / Grandview Ave SW ; noted landmarks include old courthouse Annexe currently used as apartments ($)
