Lufkin is a small town in Texas that was founded in 1836. Lufkin is located about 25 miles west of downtown Dallas and about 20 miles east of Houston. The population of Lufkin was estimated at 14,000 in 2000, but the 2010 census placed the population at 10,813. Lufkin is one of the oldest towns in Texas and it has been home to residents since 1836. The first settlers arrived from Louisiana and were known as the "Masons." In 1838, Lufkin became a town when a post office was established there. The name "Lufkin" comes from the Creek word "lufka," meaning “a place where people go to pasture” or “a meadow used for grazing animals.” The citizens of Lufkin fought against Native American attacks during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). They also developed what would become an important cotton export industry by smuggling African slaves across the Rio Grande into Mexico. After the war, many Texans decided to move to East Texas because of new opportunities available there. In 1915, oil refineries started operating in nearby Fort Worth and began producing large amounts of gasoline and other products that helped fuel America's growing economy during World War I. When World War II began, Lufkin became one of several small towns near Fort Worth designed to house military personnel on maneuvers until their installations could be relocated nearer larger cities like Dallas or Houston. After Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, many businesses closed down due to wartime rationing; however, some restaurants continued serving troops through 1942 despite government regulations preventing them from doing so without special permits from authorities overseeing food production in wartime environments. During World War II alone, over 100 local businesses closed their doors because they couldn't compete with German-owned stores which were able to sell goodsrictly within designated areas exempted from Allied restrictions such as food storage capacity and purchase prices for specific items specified by FDR because these stores were essential for manufacturing munitions necessary for America's war effort - including tanks, planes and warships - while those supplies were still obtainable outside America.[1] following World War II ended with Japan's surrender on September 2nd 1945,[2][3] most locals chose not to return back home after living through so much destruction[4][5][6][7][8] However approximately 8% who had not left TX did choose do so returning only around 3 months later after restocking what belongings they had taken with them when they evacuated

It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Lufkin was founded on December 12, 1881 by two men – A.B. Hennigan and Wm.C. Key – as a small town on the banks of the Trinity River near present-day Interstate 10 and Highway 121 (now I-30). In 1892 Lufkin became an independent municipality with its own government and school district; it had a population of 100 people when it first incorporated as a town. On November 2, 1907 Lufkin annexed rural portions of collin county to become its largest city limits; this annexation created an additional municipal charter for Lufkin that allowed for more than one million people living within its boundaries at any given time without having to apply for separate charters from each municipality
