Lufkin is a town in Collin County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,724 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Collin County and part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Lufkin is located on State Highway 281 north of Dallas. The name "Lufkin" originated from an 1859 grant to John Fagan by President James K. Polk. The grant extended along Trinity River south to what is now Lufkin and included the present-day community of Clearwater Springs. In 1867, Lt. Col J A Hogg granted land east of town to W T Smith in order that he might build a cattle ranch thereon; however, this project never materialized because Smith died before starting construction. In 1898, Lufkin's first school was established in a small log building near Main Street and Highway 281 northwest of downtown; it was called East High School until 1915 when it became known as Lufkin High School after city passage of an act calling for schools within two miles (3 km) of every lot line on which development occurred in Collin County). At that time there were just 10 students enrolled in grades one through twelve with no high school facilities or coaching staff; however, during World War I enrollment increased rapidly due to military service opportunities available in nearby Fort Worth and Arlington Heights, Illinois; by 1919 there were over 350 students attending grades one through twelve with LHS serving as both local elementary and secondary school until its closure in 1955 due to budget cuts set by then-Governor John Connally following the Korean War (the first public high school classes had resumed at LHS on September 24th after being held at various other locations throughout Collin County during that conflict). Lufkin is a town in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. Lufkin is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico and was founded in 1881 by John H. Greer as a steamboat landing on the then-new Republican River. The name "Lufkin" came from an early settler's nickname for Fort Sumter: "Hafenkirk". The Lufkin Railroad reached Lufkin in 1886 and connected with the Gulf & Western Railway near Weimar before being merged into the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway in 1907. In 1915, Lufkin became capital ofDallas County when it replaced Denton as county seat after Denton moved to Arlington Heights. In 1951, Lufkin voters approved a $5 million bond issue to build Interstate 10 through downtown which led to its rapid growth during that decade. The largest employer in Lufkin until 2000 was Tyson Foods Inc., which has since left town for suburban plants outside of Dallas/Fort Worth area but continues to maintain a presence with its corporate headquarters and research center on Park Boulevard across from High School Stadium (now home to Southlake Carroll)
