Lufkin is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. Lufkin was founded in 1872 by James A. Fife and named for him. It incorporation on April 15, 1875. In 1907 the town of Lufkin became an independent municipality with its own government and school system; however, it reverted to its original name on October 1, 1907 when both Lufkin and neighboring Fort Worth amalgamated into one city under a new name: Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The present-day downtown core of Lufkin was built around the old cotton plantations that once occupied much of what is now downtown Lufkin. The first cotton gin in this area was built about 1860 by John Witherspoon near what is now Cowtown Road and Main Street; it operated until 1902. Cotton plantations were abandoned from the early 1900s onwards because of droughts caused by changes in soil composition brought about by overgrazing during the late 1800s and early 1900s as well as advances in transportation methods such as railroads which allowed for more efficient shipping of goods across country than had been possible before. The post office at 4th and Lamar Streets opened on December 12, 1865; it closed on July 14, 1903 due to low mail volumes occasioned by improvements made to Ulysses S Grant Boulevard (now Interstate 10).
