Lufkin, Texas is a small town located in the southeast part of Texas. It was founded in 1879 by Colonel John Hogg and his wife, Martha. The first post office was established in Lufkin on November 10, 1879. The first crop grown in Lufkin was cotton. The population of Lufkin grew rapidly during the early years of the twentieth century due to developments such as oil exploration and industry growth. In 1916, Lufkin became an incorporated city with a population of over 150 people. In World War II, Lufkin played an important role as the military base for Operation Market Garden that aimed to liberation Allied forces from Nazi Germany. After the war, the city experienced rapid growth with a population cap of over 1,000 people reached by 1970. By 2000, the population had decreased to its current level due to numerous retirements and other economic reasons. However, this does not mean that there is no military history associated with Lufkin; in fact there are many dedicated members of both the military and local civilian populations who have served in various capacities within our community’s pastimes and institutions. One significant event that took place in Lufkin during World War II was when General Dwight D Eisenhower arrived at Terminal Island Naval Air Station (now Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland) on December 13th 1946 for his historic visit to Balboa Bay Naval Shipyard which led to construction of USS Midway (CV-41). This special project involved building several warships at Balboa Bay including USS Enterprise (CVN-8) which flew its first combat mission against Japanese forces on July 20th 1945 while also serving as christening gift for Commander United States Fleet Forces Southwest Asia Admiral Chester Nimitz Jr., Commander Pacific Fleet Admiral Raymond A Fiske Jr., Commodore George W Smith Jr., Chief Officer USS Enterprise Carrier Group 2nd Fleet & Rear Admiral Harry G Solicitor Services Division Captain J C McCarthy together with Commanding Officer Vice Admiral David Koeppeler USN whidh occasioned their appearance aboard Enterprise A more recent example dating back to 1957 is when it was announced that donations would be made for a new football Stadium built adjacent to Municipal Airport; this donation eventually led to Memorial Stadium being constructed next door which seats over 45,000 people! This stadium has become one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations due its beautiful natural setting as well as its ability to seat large crowds for football matches! Today yet another facility bearing Army markings is situated within the limits of town – Corpus Christi Regional Medical Center which opened its doors on October 1st 1997 having been funded by private donors! It is interesting to note that all three facilities were initially housed within what once comprised “The Old Air Force Base” located east side of downtown – now known as Main Street just northwest corner Of IH 40/IH 35A! Lufkin, Texas is a small town in Beeville County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. Lufkin was founded on November 15, 1884 by J.C. "Pete" Dockery and other early settlers who came from nearby Victoria, British Columbia. Lufkin was named after Rear Admiral James W. Farragut's flagship USS Lexington (CV-2), which had been sunk off the coast of Cuba on April Fool's Day 1885. Lufkin became an important shipping center during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its location at the mouth of the Trinity River and its access to water transportation through the Gulf of Mexico. In 1903 Lufkin became one of several towns in Texas that were designated as "Indian Territory" following the US Supreme Court's decision in Pueblo v United States (1897). As part of this designation, Native Americans were banned from living or working within their own territory and were required to leave for fear that they would become assimilated into white society. During World War II Lufkin played a significant role in supplying food for soldiers stationed overseas and later served as a major airbase for Army bombers flying over Japan during World War II. After the war ended Lufkin saw some growth due to oil exploration but has since shrunk back somewhat due to economic decline and a lack ofificant world events occurring within its proximity such as floods or hurricanes which could have impacted its business or population adversely
