The United States Air Force (USAF) is one of the largest military forces in the world and it has a rich history. The USAF was founded on August 24, 1941, when the United States signed an agreement with the Soviet Union to form the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Lufkin is a small town in Texas that was founded in 1876. It is located in the southeastern corner of the state, about 30 miles west of Houston and 25 miles east of San Antonio. Lufkin's population was 9,717 as of the 2010 census. The town is named for George H. Lufkin, a local banker who donated land to the community. The first settlers in Lufkin were farmers who arrived from Virginia and North Carolina. They built log cabins and began trading with the people around them. In 1878, two men named William Atherton and John Gentry founded a flour mill on someland they had acquired from Lufkin's previous owner, Sam Houston. At that time, Lufkin was known as "the most important cotton town in Texas." In 1881, George H. Lufkin donated 50 acres (20 ha) to the community for use as a school ground and agricultural center. He also agreed to establish a post office there and help provide transportation for residents travelling to their various businesses near Houston. The first post office was opened in 1882; it was called "Lafayette." The name change came about because at that time Lafayette County included what is now Webster Parish (northwest of Lufkin). In 1906, businessman Harry Waddell bought 1,200 acres (500 ha) around what is now downtown Lufkin for $2 million dollars; he hoped to raise enough money through development projects to finance his entire purchase! Waddell's ranch became one of the most successful cattle operations in Texas during World War I due to its ranches bordering on rural areas which supplied feedstock for U-SAAF planes flying combat missions over Europe during World War I! He died suddenly at age 78 while on vacation at his ranch near Beaumont Springs in 1916 after having plans drawn up for hundreds of jobs on his property when World War I ended! His wife did not live long enough to see her husband's success realized! Today remnants of Waddell's ranch still stand adjacent to downtown Lufki
The airforce gift history begins with the creation of the USAF in 1947. The USAF was created as a result of the National Security Act of 1947 which enacted the Joint Chiefs of Staff Plan for Defense. The plan called for the establishment of an air force to be able to defend America’s citizens and assets from attack. The USAF was initially composed of land-based aircraft and bombers but as time went on, it increased its presence in naval forces and began acquire helicopters. Over time, the USAF has become one of America’s most powerful military units. In 2010, Congress passed a bill that gave the USAF $181 billion over 10 years to increase its budget by almost 20%. This increase will allow it to purchase more heavy fighter jets, tanks, missiles, surveillance technology and other armaments. Additionally, Congress also authorized that up to $48 billion be set aside for research into new weapons and technologies. This will allow scientists and engineers at universities all over America to develop new ways to fight wars and protect our country from enemies foreign or domestic.
