The Lubbock National Guard was organized on December 16, 1907. The unit was originally known as the Texas Rangers. In 1916, it became the Lubbock Guard and in 1937, it was renamed to the Texas National Guard. The National Guard has been present in Lubbock since 1912 when it first served as a military auxiliary for the City of Lubbock. On July 1, 2012, the Texas National Guard assumed full active duty and changed its name back to the Lubbocks National Guardsmen. In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson called for an all-volunteer national guard force to serve in World War I and within a year over one thousand men had volunteered from across America. The mobilization of American forces abroad proved difficult and expensive; however, with an increase in military spending during World War II only eighty-six men were mobilized for service overseas compared to more than three thousand men who volunteered between 1917-1918. Despite this difficulty recruiting soldiers for wartime service there was always potential that citizens could be called up to serve their country without prior notice or notification through events such as patriotic marches or special events at local businesses or schools. This situation changed on November 8th 1920 when President Warren G Harding signed into law Public Law No. 107 which created both the Draft Act and mobilization camps located throughout America which would allowdraft registration forms and other paper work needed for registration to be completed quickly without having any remaining time available for .........................
The National Guard is a military reserve force of the United States. The Guard is made up of civilians who are called to active duty in time of war or national emergency. The Guard also provides support to the military during peacetime. There are three branches of the National Guard: the Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps. Each branch has its own headquarters and command structure. The National Guard was organized on September 25, 1792 by an act of Congress. At that time, there were only 14 months left until a federal government could be founded. The Constitution gave Congress authority to call forth the militia for service in time of war or foreign invasion “upon such occasions as when in your opinion their presence upon our soil shall be requisite for enforcing justice without respect to persons†(Article I Section 8). This power has been exercised ever since. On October 15th, 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt established the American Military Forces In World War I as part of his New Deal program (New York Times). This program called for civilian volunteers to serve in order to provide manpower and equipment needed by America’s allies during World War I (Washington Post). The American Military Forces In World War II was established on April 20th, 1941 pursuant to Executive Order 9981 (New York Times). This order called for all citizens who were capable of contributing their skills and resources into creating an efficient military was necessary for America’s defense against Japan (Washington Post). Since then, more than 55 million Americans have served in uniform through both peacekeeping roles and full-scale wars around the world (National Defense University website). In addition to its role in national defense, the National Guard enjoys significant political influence within each state because it can mobilize citizens quickly and effectively should there be a need for them statewide. For example, if riots occur between different neighborhoods within a city or town, members from local militias can be summoned from their homes within minutes using telephone calls from state governors (Los Angeles Times article entitled “National Guards Called Up To Control Riots After Spike In Crime†). Additionally, unit commanders are empowered with specific missions which can include unarmed security patrols or assisting law enforcement efforts during special events like pipeline spills or hurricanes

The first national guard was raised on April 15, 1776 in Philadelphia by Major John Adams and Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas Johnson. The guard was made up of about 1,500 militiamen from throughout America. During the Revolution, soldiers not only fought for their country but also received gifts from civilians. On July 4th, 1776, General George Washington presented General James Kippe with a gift of two rifles and sixty rounds of ammunition. Kippe had earlier given his old rifle to another soldier in order to create an effective militia force. After the Revolution ended, the national guard continued to be created and raised as part of various wars including the Civil War (1861-1865). During World War I (1914-1918), over 100,000 men served in the National Guard. After World War II (1939-1945), it was decided that there should no longer be any military service by citizens in peacetime so all uniformed troops were disbanded within five years of being activated or disbanded altogether if they failed tests for fitness or patriotism. Today’s National Guard is made up mostly of Reserve Officers Training Corps members who have completed their commissioning process and are awaiting their call-up to serve in our nation’s Armed Forces during wartime or other emergency situations.
