The U.S. Navy has a long and proud history in Longview, Texas. The navy first arrived in the area in 1821 when Commodore John Rodgers sent his ship USS Constitution to establish a naval base at Fort Bend County. The navy was originally called the “Texas Navy” because of its focus on defending Texas against Native American attacks. In 1846, the navy established a permanent presence in Longview with the arrival of USS Princeton from New York City. The navy used Princeton as its main base for operations and conducted many patrols off the Texas coast. In 1863, Admiral David Dixon Porter ordered USS Wichita into action off Mexico City in what is known asthe “Wichita Massacre” after Wichita mistakenly shot at Mexican Marines while they were practicing firenery exercises ashore. Throughout its history, the navy has played an important role in Lone Star State development and culture. William Mize served as Director of Naval Intelligence during World War II and helped developLongview into one of America’s most important naval ports. Additionally, numerous warships have been moored here such as Enterprise (CV-6) and Fletcher (Fletcher Class destroyer).

Longview is a small town in rural Texas located about 20 miles northeast of Austin. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Texarkana–Dallas metropolitan area. The namesake of Longview is Samuel Gregg Longstreet, who founded what became known as the Longhorn Steak House in 1887. The restaurant was later renamed the Lone Star Grill and has been in business continuously since that date. In 1907, millionaire Edwin Vail bought the property which housed the steak house and laid out a small town around it called Longview Village. The village grew rapidly and by 1920 had a population of 3,500 people. However, Vail's death in 1923 left most of his properties to his children and grandchildren, and development stopped until 1960 when Interstate 15 was built through central Amarillo and Longview Village merged with it. In 1969, Long View High School opened its doors to students following years of construction on what would become campus today. When Interstate 15 was widened in 1973 and nowincludes three lanes east-west throughLongview Villagethe school attendance exploded; by 1984 it had reached 362 students per classroom (including freshmen). Today long view HS offers 9th thru 12th grade courses as well as dual enrollment with Lamar Community College & Brazos Christian University for high school athletes looking to pursue college sports scholarships or other athletic opportunities beyond high school

Today, the navy is composed of more than 650 ships and submarines, including some of the world’s largest and most advanced warships. The navy’s gift history is reflective of this long-standing relationship between America and its naval force. The first USS Constitution was commissioned in 1797. This ship served as America’s first major warship and helped secure U.S. Independence from Great Britain. The USS Constitution also served as America’s flagship during the War of 1812, which resulted in Canada being defeated at Yorktown (in what is now Virginia). The USS Constitution was also used to inaugurate George Washington as President of the United States in 1799. Throughout its history, the USN has shown itself to be an important partner with both America and our allies around the world. One particular aspect that makes the USN such a valuable asset to society is its ability to provide humanitarian assistance overseas – often timesbeckoning relief efforts before events have even taken place. For example, during Hurricane Katrina in 2005,the USNS Louisiana became one of only two vessels on scene within minutes after landfall due to her extensive experience carrying supplies necessary for relief efforts.- She later transported more than 1 million people across five states in response to Hurricane Rita.- And she did it all without using any resources other than her own crewmembers.– In October 2018, she towed a Dutch vessel damaged by Hurricane Maria off Puerto Rico so that it could be repaired

In 1848, Longview was founded by James Long and his brother-in-law David Ould as a small trading post on the Brazos River. The post grew rapidly and in 1864 it became a town. In 1872, the town erected its first school house. It became an important stop on the Chisholm Trail which connected Texas with Kansas. The town also developed into a agricultural center with plantations and ranches hosting events such as rodeo competitions and cattle drives. Longview experienced some significant growth in the 20th century, especially during World War II when it became one of the largest cattle towns in Texas. The war also led to increased development and investment in Longview, which has resulted in several notable buildings and landmarks including the Prairie View A&M University campus, Main Street Station, and Midway Mall.

In the 1920s, Longview established itself as a munitions plant, responsible for manufacturing everything from artillery to bombs. After World War II, the town experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for Dallas. However, during the late 1960s and early 1970s,Longview began to experience economic Recession due to cultural changes in Texas that had swept across the state. The population of Longview declined precipitously over this time period, eventually reaching its low point in the early 1980s. However, since then the town has undergone several waves of high-growth throughout the 1990s and 2000s thanks to its location gateway on Interstate 35W and its proximity to major metropolitan areas such as Dallas and Houston.
