The town of Longview was founded in 1866 by cattle ranchers on the banks of the Sabine River. The area that is now Longview was part of the original land grant to Austin, and it became a thriving community with cotton plantations, a bakery and two banks. In 1916, Longview became an incorporated municipality. By 1940,Longview had grown to over 100 residents and its first public library opened. In 1951, the Texas Legislature designated La Salle University as the initial recipient of state funding to promote academic excellence in nearby LongVIEW neighborhoods. In 1964-1965, Longview was one of three towns in Travis County that voted to secede from Texas in order to form their own political entity known as Republic of Texas (ROT). On November 3rd of that year, voters in LongVIEW passed a referendum requesting secession from TX and began preparations for formal annexation by ROT on January 1st 1966. The process took several months and resulted in 10% of Travis County’s population voting against annexation while Over 50% supported incorporation into ROT. The formal annexation ceremony occurred on January 14th 1966 when Reformed Baptist Church was dedicated as the new county courthouse and ROT’s first elected officials were sworn in. Since then,Longview has been characterized as being both an active participant within local government and an excellent location for businesses due to its ample access to Interstate 735 which makes it easy to get around town; however, it has also come under fire for some controversial issues such as its zoning laws which have caused many small businesses owners difficulty getting licensed or continuing operations because they can't afford permits or abide by rules set by local governing body
