From the moment that America declared war on Japan in 1941, theAAF was committed to waging an all-out effort against Nazi Germany. Aircraft were acquired and converted for military use, including bombers and fighters. By 1945, American air power had decisively won the war against Hitler’s Axis empire. As a result of this victory, American airmen received many gifts from abroad. One such gift was a group of fighter planes donated by Australia as part of their assistance to the Americans during World War II. These planes formed the nucleus for Operation Crossroads which aimed to bomb strategic targets within Germany using British Spitfires and Hurricanes flown by American pilots. The AAF also accepted donations from other countries during WWII. For example, Great Britain made a donation of aircraft and crews in 1942 which served as replacements for AmericanAAF personnel killed in action or Shot Down over Japan while fighting under Japanese command. Sweden also contributed aircraft and crews duringWWII; these planes flew into Allied airspace to carry supplies back home to Sweden after being damaged or lost en route over Nazi-occupied Europe. Longview, Texas was founded in 1876 by George Long and his wife, Sarah. It is located in the Houston-Galveston area, and became a municipality in 1907. The town developed around the Longview Railway Depot which served as its central business district. Population growth continued through the early 21st century as oil production increased in the region. In 2003, Longview voters passed an ordinance designating it a city. The city has since grown rapidly with population reaching over 75,000 residents by 2017. The economy of Longview is based primarily on services such as education, health care, retail trade, and transportation. The first inhabitants of what is now Longview were Native American tribes who hunted and traded with Spanish colonists and Mexicans for sustainable resources such as deer hides and arrows. A wagon road connected Galveston to Socorro on the Mexican shoreline during this time period so goods could be transported easily between these two points without having to go through Houston or Corpus Christi. By 1876, George Long had purchased land east of present day LongVIEW from Manuel Diaz de la Torre for $2 per acre (and later donated additional land). He named his new community after himself –George longville –because he thought it would be a more permanent name than Galveston or Houston (which at that time were only shortform names). The first post office opened in 1877 under this name. In 1907, whenHouston annexed most of Galveston County includingLongVIEWS 3rd Ward*, Mayor John Fenton authorized annexation of all remaining unincorporated areas east of IH-10* within reason*. At that time there were about 15 settlements scattered throughout Harris County* excluding LONGVIEWS 4th Ward*. On July 1st 1907 * AFTER HOUSTON ADOPTED ALL OF THE UNINCORPORATED AREAS EAST OF IH-10* LONGVIEW became an official part of HOUSTON! The population boom reached its height during World War II due to the war effort lumbering across TX.* By 1946 there were over 100 families living in LONGVIEW*. However due to decline in oil production following World War II many businesses closed down* local governments experienced budget cuts ensuing fiscal problems*. This led to much unrest within the communities* culminating with a series of riots/protests (*aftermath see http://www.historylinkways.org/houston/txlongviews_the_riots)in 1991 *. After years of wrangling City Council finally agreed to form a redevelopment agency called Westside Development Corporation which was charged with redeveloping abandoned properties *alongwith creating jobs(*see website)). Today LONGVIEW has come back strong thanks largely to radial roads like I-610*, Beltway 8*, Hwy 290*, Loop 610b & FM 1960 providing easy access into town while also preserving its unique character**/. Despite some challenges like high crime rates††† (due mostly to outlying areas being left unprotected*) long VIEWERS continue their support for their hometown by voting twice via initiative ensuring their voice is heard loud and clear!
