The town of Lockhart, Texas was founded in 1887 by James F. Lockhart and his husband John A. Lockhart. The first store was called the First National Bank and it opened in 1888. The lockhart post office was established in 1889 and the first mail carrier was named H.W. Stephenson. In 1893, the local newspaper, the "Lockhart Republican", started publishing daily and it is still published today. In 1899, a schoolhouse was built on Main Street and it is now used as a library annex. In 1907, a new water tower was built on US Highway 380 adjacent to the old water tower that had been destroyed by a fire two years earlier. The new water tower became known locally as "The Girdle". In 1912, an agricultural fair was held at Parkland Cemetery and it is now known as the Lockhart Agricultural Fair which is one of the largest agricultural fairs in Texas . In 1916, Tom Ladd began manufacturing bicycles at what is now called Ladd's Cycles on College Avenue which continues to be run today . In 1907, John Waddell opened the first commercial store in Lockhart with twenty-six shelves of groceries and additional sales space upstairs for services such as car repair and photography supplies. By 1912, Waddell had developed into one of Lockhart's most successful merchants with over seventy businesses operating under his ownership alone including restaurants (the original Jack Daniels restaurant still stands today), taverns (the now defunct Red Roof Inn), hardware stores (Bessemer Hardware), banks (First National Bank) and department stores (JCPenney). In 1916 Waddell sold his business interests to his son John Peebles Waddell Sr., who continued to operate the store until his retirement in 1984; since then it has been run by their grandson John Peebles Waddell III.. After being renamed "Houston", Lockhart experienced rapid growth due to its location within easy reach of both Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth airports. As air travel became more popular during the late 20th century, businesses began moving into Lockhart so that they could offer services such as airport shuttle service or parking lot rentals online or through mail order.
