Lockhart is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth-Arlington-Bedford Combined Statistical Area. The earliest mention of Lockhart was as an Indian village on the San Marcos River. The first European to visit Lockhart was Cornelius Van Zeeland in 1823, and he named it "New Amsterdam". In 1827, Dutchman Hendrick Aertsz visited and called it "Houtenburgh". However, this name may have been taken from nearby Houstenburgh (now houston). In 1839, Colonel James Fenton established a military post in what is now Lockhart. He named it Fort Fenton after himself. In 1845–46, Josephine McLennan built a log cabin here which became known as McLennan's Cabin or McLennan's Home. After her death in 1865, her husband John Alexander McLennan bought the cabin and lived there until his death in 1893. In 1862, General Custer fought his last battle at Little Bighorn near present day Lockhart; however his troops did not return to their original camps but instead moved into Resaca Creek camp about two miles east of present day Lockhart. Thiscamp provided logistical support for Confederate forces that were besieging Fort Riley during the Civil War era south of Wichita Falls (later Arlington Heights) across from Wichita Falls High School today’s Clear Fork Park .lockharttx map
The town of Lockhart, Texas was founded in 1881 by James Barker and his brother-in-law, H.W. Pritchard. The town was named for the lockhart oak tree that stands near the original homestead. In 1886, the first post office was established in Lockhart and remained in operation until it closed in 1948. In 1906, the first school opened in Lockhart and remains in operation to this day. In 1952, the first hospital opened in Lockhart and continues to serve as a medical center today. In 1963,Lockhart became a city and has since grown into one of its most vibrant communities. Today, there are several major businesses based withinlockhart including Dell Corporation (headquarters), ExxonMobil (production facilities), The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema (the only theater within city limits) and AT&T BellSouth (the largest provider of telephone service within city limits).
