Lockhart is a small town in Texas, located on the banks of the Trinity River. The population was 906 at the 2000 census. Lockhart is one of eight towns in Travis County, Texas. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Lockhart were farmers who arrived from Kentucky around 1836. By 1878, there were only three families living in the town when it became a county seat of Travis County. Railroads brought people and businesses to Lockhart, and by 1912 it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1974, after being merged into Austin Township, Lockhart had a population of just 335 people but has since grown significantly with annexations from other nearby townships and villages through annexation processes that have occurred every few years since then. The present day downtown area was built up over time due to its position as an important transportation interchange for both local farmers and visitors alike during the early 20th century; many factories and businesses used the downtown area as their headquarters until they moved out or went out of business. The current downtown area was built primarily during World War II when large industrial plants were located here including The Dow Chemical Company (now DowDuPont) which manufactured synthetic rubber products for military use; First National Bank (now Wells Fargo); Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company; General Electric Aviation Corporation's Flight 749 wreckage site (now Museum Texas Tech University - Lubbock); Texaco Refinery No 2 gas station; and Hughes Aircraft Company headquarters Annex #1 (later known as Hughes Tower). Lockhart, Texas is a small town located in Willacy County, Texas. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settlers in Lockhart were David and Susannah Nicholson who arrived in 1836. They erected a log cabin on the present site of Lockhart City and started to cultivate land. In 1840, they bought 4 acres (1 km²) of land from the heirs of James Hurd who had died intestate leaving an estate valued at $2,000. TheNicholson family would continue to live in Lockhart for over 150 years until their death in 1978. In 1851, John Fenton moved his family from Huntsville to Lockhart and opened a store called "Fenton's grocery". He would remain open until 1886 when he sold his business to William Pemberton who reopened it as "Pemberton's grocery". This business would continue until 1907 when it was sold to Harry Dillard who operated it for over 25 years until its sale to Ladd & Wesson Ammunition Corporation which operated it until 1984. It was during this time that Lockhart experienced some significant growth with many new businesses coming online including Ladd & Wesson Ammunition Corporation which began producing ammunition there in 1984; Firestone Tire and Rubber Company which began manufacturing tires there in 1961; First National Bank of Dallas which opened its doors on Main Street in 1962; and JB Hunt Oil Refinery where crude oil was processed before being exported into Europe beginning with production at the refinery starting on October 17, 1951. Todaylockhart is still home to many industries however itsetonation has declined by more than 20% since 2000 due largely to suburban sprawl developing adjacent to its downtown core while other nearby municipalities have seen similar growth rates resulting in increased tax bills for lockheart residents
