The Navy has been a part of Texas for over 100 years, and Lewisville is one of the most active Naval bases in the area. The base was originally established in 1845 as the Fort Worth Navy Yard, and it served as both a navy station and a commercial center during its early days. In 1865, the Navy moved to what is now Lewisville after Congress designated it as an naval yard on account of its strategic location at the mouth of Sam Houston’s River. Over time, other branches of the military have also been stationed at Lewisville, including Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton; Army Air Forces Station Whiteman; and Coast Guard Station Lewisville. Today, NAS Lewisville provides maritime security services to Texans from all corners of the state. The history of gift giving by members of the military can be traced back to 1861 when Union sailors under Commodore John Farragut destroyed Confederate batteries at Corpus Christi Bay. In 1893, Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter awarded midshipman John Wylebrandt US Naval Academy midshipman titles for creating beautiful silver cups with inscription “For America” that were given as Presents to American sailors afloat. Commodore Porter also presented USS Constitution Museum curator Dr. Augustus Saint-Gaudens with a set of five gold cymbals he had salvaged from CSS Alabama while she was being towed into port by USS Constitution (CDR James Kapp). In World War II, NAS Lewisville played an important role in supporting Allied forces throughout North Africa and Europe. From 1943 through 1945, NAS Lewisville supported Operation Neptune’s Spear which helped liberate French North Africa from Axis occupation. During this time period, NAS Lewisville earned numerous awards including two Silver Stars for heroismickr service rendered during battles ashore ashore and six Meritorious Unit Awards (MUA) for general excellence in naval operations afloat or ashore during World War II). From 1951 until 1959 NESH received authorization to construct installations on land adjacent to NAS Lewisville providing facilities such as aviation fuel storage tanks (1951), helicopter pads (1957), shipyards (1958), ammunition magazines(1959), mess halls/ clubhouses/ recreation areas(1960), runways/ taxiways/ landing strips(1962), fire control systems (1963) and a navigation aids system (1965). These additions increasedNASLewisvillee’s size by almost 50%!Today NESH operates 6 decommissioned warships berth side along with more than 2 dozen Missile Defense Agency vessels docked off shore!

The scholarship is open to Dartmouth College students who have achieved “exceptional academic achievement” while attending school full time or part time since 2000. 4. In 2009, it was announced that USS Enterprise would be renamed USS John F Kennedy after President John F Kennedy’s assassinated presidential election year in 1963. This was one of several Navy ships that were given new names following his death that year such as USS Constitution (CV-46) and USS Enterprise (CVN-70).
