The Lewisville Army National Guard was established in 1936. The unit traces its roots back to the Texas Infantry Regiment, which was organized on May 15, 1866 at Camp Bowie near Austin. The regiment served in the Mexican-American War and during Reconstruction in the Lone Star State. In 1940, the 1st Battalion, 117th Infantry Regiment was activated as a volunteer infantry battalion and assigned to 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Cavalry Division. The battalion fought in World War II as part of Task Force 77 and Assault Battalion 914th Infantry Regiment until it was disbanded in 1945. In 1951, 2nd Battalion, 107th Infantry Regiment became an all-volunteer infantry battalion and assigned to 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 6th Cavalry Division; it served untilactivated again in 1977 as a reserve unit with headquarters at Fort Bliss near San Antonio. Lewisville is a town in Kaufman County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,806 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1879 by German immigrants as a farming and ranching community. In 1907 Lewisville became the county seat of Kaufman County. Lewisville is located on the Arkansas River, about 25 miles (40 km) north of Dallas and 30 miles (48 km) east of Houston. The town was first settled in 1879 by Germans who had come to America from Germany via Austria-Hungary. The first settlers were farm families who raised livestock and made their living from beekeeping, fishing, and horticulture; later they built homes near what is now I-45 and US-59. By 1907 Lewisville had become the county seat of Kaufman County after it was chosen over nearby Springtown because it had a more developed infrastructure including a courthouse, jail, post office, teachers’ training school for girls, an ambulance station, business district with several stores and two hotels/, churches/. In 1927 the community built its own airport which still exists today as Field Airport; it served both local aviation needs until 1990 when tower ownership passed to DFW Airport Holdings Inc., which closed it down in 2001 after suffering financial problems that led to its receivership.
