The Leon Valley Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1892. The department is currently made up of ten firefighters and two engines. The department has responded to numerous emergencies, both natural and man-made, over the years. In honor of their service to the community, the department has developed a number of specialties including mountain firefighting, hazmat response, public service response (serving as a citizen patrols on streets), hazardous materials response ( responding to spills/fires), and extractions from mines/caves.
It is a small town in Leon County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,959 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1879 by John and Fannie Ellinger. It was named for the valley that runs through it. The Ellingers had originally come from Sweden and were giving their land back to the state of Kansas as compensation for land taken from them during the Indian Wars. They donated their holdings to Leon County on May 12, 1881. The two-story white clapboard schoolhouse which stands today on Main Street was built in 1903. A post office called Valleymail opened in 1906 and remained open until it merged with Wichita Falls Post Office in 1935. In 1907, an oil well was drilled in what is now Leon Valley and began production six years later; this led to increased development around the town and contributed to its growthrate over time. Thanks to irrigation systems built by Jules Spearman (1893-1962), who operated a large cotton plantation near present-day Lubbock, Leon Valley became one of Texas' most productive cottongrowing counties during the early 20th century; he also developed other industries such as cattle ranching and farming throughout his life including being mayor of Wichita Falls from 1945 until his death in 1962). Leon Valley is a small town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Chambersburg Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Leon Valley was Levi Richardson in 1875. The town was named after General James B.Leonidas Polk, commander of Brigade A (1st Texan Infantry) during the Mexican-American War and one of the heroes of that conflict. In 1903, Leon Valley developed a water system to serve its community and surrounding farming areas. In 1938, Leon Valley had its own telephone company which continued until deregulation in 1984. In 1955, Leon Valley HIGH SCHOOL opened for grades 9 through 12 under the name "Amarillo High". It became known as "Leon Valley Jr./Sr." HS in 1976 when it amalgamated with Amarillo Junior/Senior HS (now Chico Hills Jr./Sr.) near by to form one school district. The most recent major development to affect Leon Valley is the construction of Interstate 10 east of town along US 287 in 2000 as part of the efforts to improve access to Amarillo from farther away and reduce traffic congestion on I-10 nearby towns such as Canyon Lake and Lubbock . The goal was to create more open space within town limits and help preserve an important piece of Texas history
The Leon Valley was named for the Spanish conquistador, Francisco de Paula Valverde, who explored the area in 1536. The valley is located in Hudspeth County and includes parts of Tomball, Spring Branch, Cypress Creek and Clear Lake. The valley was part of the Mexican Republic before it became a U.S. state in 1848. The Leon Valley is home to many agricultural activities such as corn, cotton and cattle ranching.
