Leon Valley is a small town in the panhandle of Texas. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is located in Hudspeth County and sits on the banks of the Red River. The land that Leon Valley now occupies was first settled by people who were moving westward from what is now Oklahoma in 1845. They named their settlement after General James A. Leon, who had fought for Texas during the Mexican-American War. In 1851, a post office was established at Leon Valley, and settlers started to arrive to try to find a place where they could grow crops and live off the land. In 1865, another group of settlers moved into what is now Leon Valley from Van Horn County, Kansas. This group named their community after General John Fenton Clarke, who had been an officer in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. Over time, other names were given to different parts ofLeon Valley– such as Pecos Vale (named for a creek that flows through it), Brush Prairie (named for some trees that lined its southern border), and finally Hill Country (named for nearby hills). Today, most of what is today Leon Valley was part of Hudspeth County when it was formed in 1781. After Texas gained independence from Mexico in 1836, many Texans decided to move westward and take up land near New Orleans because they saw this as an opportunity to get rich off of slavery—a practice which continued until well into the 21st century. When Hudspeth County was created, much of what lay east of present-day Highway 377 remained undeveloped or only had sparse growth on it due to lack of access or interest by neighbors or developers alike.

Leon Valley is a small town located in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,551 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 by pioneers from Illinois. The community became a cattle and farming town after annexation of neighboring Hudspeth County in 1907. In the 1930s, Leon Valley became an important oil center due to its location on the Red River and its proximity to Shell Oil Company rigs. The town has experienced various periods of decline and redevelopment over the years, but it is still one of the most vibrant communities in Medina County. Today, Leon Valley offers a variety of cultural attractions including a museum filled with antique furniture and appliances from around the world, as well as an agricultural fair that features rodeo events and livestock auctions.
The Leon Valley Massacre happened on October 15, 1876, when three men from the town of Leon were killed by Texans in what is now eastern Brazoria County. The men had been gathering firewood near a creek when they were attacked by nine Texans. One of the attackers, James W. Hogg, shot and killed two of the Leon Valley men before turning on his own comrades and shooting three more people. The remaining man, John Davenport, fled into the woods but was pursued and shot dead by Hogg.
