The Leon Valley Army Depot was a decommissioned army post in Leon Valley, Texas that has been used as a gift shop and storage facility. The depot closed its doors permanently on July 1, 2018 after serving the community for over 50 years. The depot was originally established in 1917 and served as the home of the 3rd Infantry Division. In 1959, it became the home of the 501st Parachute Infantry Brigade. It also served as a processing center for supplies procured by the military from all over America. By 1990, it had become too small to beOficialy an active duty army post and was used only sporadically as a store and gift shop until it closed its doors permanently on July 1, 2018. Since its closure, there have been numerous offers to purchase or restore the property to its former glory. However, no one has yet come up with an idea that would bring back the depot’s long history of serving local communities and supporting their military needs. Until now! In 1969, all but three of the original six schools were replaced by new buildings: Holy Cross High School for girls; Our Lady of Perpetual Help Elementary School for grades 3 through 6; and Lone Star Junior/Senior High School for grades 11 through 12. Leon Valley is a small town in Maverick County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. The area now known as Leon Valley was first settled by farmers in 1851. A post office was established there in 1857, and the town grew slowly until it became a borough in 1907. In 1912, it merged with neighboring Fort Worth to form the city of Fort Worth. In 1930, Leon Valley lost its borough status and became an unincorporated community within the city of Fort Worth. In 1965, it was annexed by Dallas as part of the new city limits. Leon Valley has experienced several boom times over its history: during World War II (when many local businesses produced munitions), during the oil crisis of 1970-1973 (the town’s economy boomed thanks to shale gas development), and most recently during the current economic recession (which has led to a decrease in population). However, even though Leon Valley has had some success since 2000s economic growth – including becoming one ofFort Worth’s fastest growing neighborhoods – many residents continue to struggle economically speaking due to high unemployment rates and persistent poverty levels.
