The Leon Valley Air Force Base is home to the Texas Air National Guard's 341st Wing, which has been stationed at the base since 1974. The wing was activated on July 1, 1974 and is responsible for air policing in the Leon Valley area. In 2006, a new hangar was built on the property and it now houses two squadrons of F-16s from Seymour Johnson AFB, NC. In 1984, then-Lt. Col. Don Crouch donated an F-16 Fighting Falcon to the Texas Air National Guard as part of a gift package that included other military equipment and supplies. This donation marked the first time an air force deployed gift had been given to a state or local government in Texas. The wing currently flies three types of aircraft: A-10 Thunderbolt IIs from Offutt AFB, NE; E-2C Hawkeye from Elmendorf AFB, AK; and KC-130J Stratotankers from Joint Base Lewis McChord, WA. The 341st Wing also operates two helicopters: the Bell AH1Z Viper and Sikorsky HS “Hercules” Mk 2A/B helicopter trainers. Here are just a few examples from our past: -A T-shaped missile launcher nicknamed “The Angel” was donated to the USAF by Lockheed Martin in 1962. It is now used by fighter pilots across America to shoot down enemy planes. -In 2003, an aircraft hangar at Lackland AFB was dedicated in honor of Major General Carl Eichenwald, who served as Commander on Staff at Headquarters AFMC during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). The hangar contained more than 50 Boeing 727 airframes gifted by member countries during OIF. -In 2006, an entire wing was dedicated at Holloman AFB in New Mexico to remember Majestic AAF Service Squadron 669 (MARS) which transported U2 spyplanes over Europe during World War II. MARS also flew missions over Japan helping Allied forces fight against Japan’s war effort

Air Force Deployed Gift History began in 1978 when the USAF flew a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft equipped with a gift box designed to commemorate deployments. Ed Purdy, then the Squadron Commander of Cannon AFB, New Mexico, initiated the program and served as its first commander. Since then, the Air Force has flown more than 2,000 gift flights across all service branches. Every year an average of 25 different items are exchanged and enjoyed by servicemembers and their families during deployed periods. These include items like flowers or candy bars for loved ones on deployed overseas rotations; radios, headsets and other electronic equipment for soldiers on combat patrols; books and magazines for troops living off base;; toys for children visiting military bases worldwide; and much more! The deployments themselves can be quite hectic - not to mention expensive - so this gracious gesture from our military is sure to make a big impact on those who are away from home.

Leon Valley is a small town in Bell County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,817 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The Leon Valley community name was given to it by John L. Leon, who brought his cattle and horses overland to this area in 1873. He founded a ranch here and named it after himself. The first post office in the community was called "Lenox". In 1902, the community changed its name to "Leon Valley" after John Llewellyn III, who had been born there in 1885. In 1951, a wind power plant was built in nearby Vernon and became one of the first plants of its kind in the United States. The plant produced electricity for residents of Leon Valley until it closed down in 1990. Since then, many businesses have opened up around the wind power plant site including restauraunts such as Red Lobster and Applebee's restaurants as well as homebuilders like Home Depot and Jardine Homes. Additionally, several large stores have opened up within walking distance of Highway 281 (the main east-west street through town) including Drugstore/Grocery Store Co., Dollar General Supercenter & Meijer Outlet Center - anchor store for North Texas' largest mall - as well as two nightlife venues: Live Nation's House of Blues and First American Saloon - both located near Interstate 30 on Hwy 281 just outside town limits across from Sheetz Drug Store Co..
