Leander is a town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,664 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth-Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Leander were Spanish soldiers who came to scout for land grants in 1795. A mission was founded in 1810 by Father José de la Salle and built on the present day site of Leander High School. The town became platted in 1836 and named for him. In 1857, a railroad was built through the area and soon Leander had become an important commercial center with its own cotton gin, grocery store, post office and school district. In 1865, railroads were extended to Dallas/Fort Worth and Leander became a small city with its own hall of administration and other public buildings. A new courthouse was completed in 1904 and served as the seat of government until 1912 when it moved to downtown Fort Worth. During World War II, Leander played an important role as one of three military airfields used by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) during the war effort; it also produced munitions for this service. After World War II ended, many manufacturing companies left town because of falling prices for materials brought over from overseas; however, some remain today such as Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT), Dow Chemical Company (DOW), IBM Johnson Controls Company (IBM), HPE Corporation (HPE) and BASF SE AG (BASF). After Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans on August 29th 2005 - which destroyed much of what little remained within reach of that community - many businesses closed their doors or relocated away from New Orleans due to high insurance rates registration associated with Katrina damage levels alone amounting almost $200 million dollars! Many locals decided not to rebuild their homes due to concerns about potential future hurricanes or floods; however others have since started reconstruction efforts such as "Cities For All" which partners with local organizations throughout Louisiana who help offer housing assistance while rebuilding infrastructure including sewers & water systems etc...Leander has since bounced back quicklygateway into texas!
