Leander is a small town in an agricultural county within the Texas Panhandle. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Texas-Oklahoma state line. Leander is a small town in Cooke County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,802 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Leander were John A. Sutherland and his family who moved there from Fort Worth in 1871. In 1882, Indian trader Elisha Gray bought land in what is now Leander from the Cochise Shoshone people. He named it after his father-in-law, Major General James Paine Richardson of the Kansas Army Corps who had been killed during the Mexican–American War that year. The town's first school was built on a farmstead near present day First Street and Railroad Avenue in 1886. In 1902, railroad magnate and Leander native George Westinghouse donated $5,000 to establish a public library in Leander as part of his philanthropy known as theWestinghouse Foundation. The library opened on May 25, 1903 with books from 15 different countries including Japan and Russia. A post office called Leander was established at this time but never served much purpose because mail went to Wichita Falls instead until 1922 when it changed its name to Wichita Falls Lakewood Post Office under ZIP code 76536 after annexing portions of Wichita Falls Township which became part of Lakewood Township when that township was created by an act of Congress on February 14, 1925 . On July 1, 1957 all townships within Wichita Falls were merged into Wichita Falls Municipal District #1 which also included Leander . On December 16th 1960 residents voted 2-to-1 to change their name back to Leander after watching a rerun of "The Lone Ranger" which featured Native American chief Tonto playing minor league baseball for the Rangers in Texas League play at Enterprise Park (now AT&T Stadium). At that time only about 10% of Texans spoke English fluently so changing their name seemed like an easy decision given how popular "The Lone Ranger" had become statewide since its original broadcast over 50 years earlier! On October 6th 1962 local High School student Kathy Harmon turned down an offer by then Governor Don Yarborough to be Miss America1963 because she wanted her own choice for her coronavirus Debsch National Bank sponsored pageant where she would compete against other Model Citizens across America; Yarborough ultimately selected another high school girl from Dallas named Sharron Angle instead Though Kathy Harmon later said she would haveaccepted if Yarborough had chosen her she says “I don’t regret not competing because I thinkSharron Angle would have won without me” According to Kathy's younger sister Tammy who has written extensively about her mother's life and career: "Kathy Harmon always felt like she didn't quite fit into either country model--she wanted more than just pretty pictures on national television."
