League City is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. League City was founded in 1881 and was named for the League of American clubs that had been organized in 1878. It became an incorporated city on December 12, 1905. The current mayor is Edwin M. In 1892, Atlanta Cotton Company established a mill in League City to process cotton from the surrounding plantations. In 1907, Arkansas-based Union Pacific Railroad donated land to League City for an express railway line connecting Lubbock and Dallas. The railroad name was changed to the Dallas-Fort Worth Railway in 1912. In 1928, the Tyler Independent School District became one of many school districts within Metroplex Schools District #1 which included Arlington (Dallas), Plano (Plano), Mesquite (Mesquite Heights), Garland (Garland Hills), Irving (Irvington) and League City schools; this district also included Frisco (Frisco Ranch), Coppell (Coppell Junction), Longview (Walker Ranch) and Farmers Branch (Farmers Branch Junction). By 2001, the district had fallen behind other school districts within Metroplex by enrollment size so that by 2008 it merged into #1 District #2; however, in 2011 it regained its charter status as an independent school district with students located in League City only through online instruction from KIPP Austin Academy which has since closed down. During World War II many businesses were created or renovated in response to military demand including munitions plants along I-10 near Fort Worth and a meatpacking plant at Arlington Mills on Interstate 10 west of Waco; these factories produced munitions until 1946 when they closed due to economic decline throughout much of North America following World War II. However, over 60% of all league city businesses survived into adulthood during this time period with some continuing production until around 2000 while others ceased operations between 1945 and 2000 according as well. One notable exception during this time period was JB Hi-Fi's store which continued business until it closed down in 1984 due to competition from CD music stores beginning around 1982 who offered cheaper prices on records than Hi-Fi could afford to pay for airplay on his radio station playing classical music instead
