In League City, Texas, the airforce has a long and proud history. The city is home to the largest American Air Force Base in the world and was also where first jets were test- flown during World War II. League City, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located in Gregg County. The population was 12,569 at the 2010 census. League City is home to the American Legion Post #443 and United States Air Force Base Wright-Patterson AFB. It also has a small town called Haltom City which lies just east of League City on State Highway 157. The community of League City was founded by Scotsmen when they came overland from Scotland in 1836 as part of the Transcontinental Railroad project. The first post office was established in 1837 and remained open until it closed in 1893. In 1886, local businessmen bought an adjoining tract of land and named it League City after their hometown of Liverpool, England (now Liverpool). The city's first school opened in 1889, and its first mayor was John Witherspoon McLarty Jr.. In 1903, Union Pacific Railway built a branch line out of nearby Wichita Falls to provide service to investors who had purchased land along the rail line; this led to rapid growth for the city because Alliance Fruit Company developed fruit plantations there soon afterward. In 1916, after World War I ended with Armistice Day, Mayor John Prentice organized the first municipal election ever held in Gregg County; he won re-election despite being challenged by four other candidates. In 1927, voters approved passage of a resolution proclaiming League City an "International Airport". After years of effort by various organizations including Chamber Of Commerce president JT Gorman and civic leader Harry Sills, Houston-based Northwest Airlines leased Terminal A at Hobby Airport for use as an airfield during World War II; this allowed further growth for the city due to increased aviation activity there during wartime times especially since much military hardware was produced locally. After hostilities ended on September 2nd 1945 - less than two months after terminals at Hobby Airport were taken over by USAAF forces - most Aviation Facilities reverted back to civilian control once again with only Terminal B remaining operational as an airfield/terminal shopping center operated by Northwest Airlines until it closed in 1967 due to low passenger traffic levels combined with competition from new airports such as Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) which opened that same year andHouston's Love Field (Lufthansa Center) which became operational following reconstruction following Hurricane Ike earlier that year . Despite these challenges however league CITY continued growing rapidly through annexations from neighboring cities such as San Antonio into what would become today’s downtown area making it one of largest continuously growing municipalities west OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER
