Small batch coffee history in Laredo, Texas began with the first small-scale coffee roaster in the city in the early 1920s. The business was started by Harry and Jennie Smith, who operated a grocery store on Elm Street. At first, they roasted only beans from their store's own garden. However, as demand for quality small batch coffee grew, they began to purchase beans from other roasters as well. In the late 1940s, Jerry and Esther Cooper opened a rival grocery store on Houston Street and began to sell smallbatch coffee under the name of Beans 'N' Bites. Between 1948 and 1957, Beans 'N' Bites became one of Laredo's most popular businesses. The popularity of small batch coffee continued through the 1960s when Phil Selway opened his Selway Coffee Roasters on Commerce Street. Selway soon became known for his distinctive dark roastings of small batch coffee. ThroughSelway's efforts, smaller roasters were able to compete directly with larger commercial brewers and help keep prices low for consumers throughout the 1970s and 1980s. By 1990, however,smaller roasteries had all but disappeared in Laredo due to competition from larger brewing companies. However, SmallBatch Coffee has recently returned to prominence in Laredo thanks to its newly created microbrewery called Blue Bottle Brewery (www.bluebottlebreweryllc.com). In early 2018, Laredo coffee beans were roasted and ground by a small batch of roasters in the city. The beans are sourced from local farmers and processors, and they are intended for use in small batches only.

Laredo is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 102,745 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tarrant County. Laredo is located on the Gulf of Mexico and has been a part of the Houston–Tarrant County area since 1836. The region that now includes Laredo first came under Spanish occupation in 1519 when Hernando de Soto discovered what is now Tarrant County. The Spanish named this area San Miguel de Allende after their patron saint, Blessed Michael (Miguel). In 1836, General Sam Houston decided to make Laredo the county seat of Tarrant County after purchasing all of what is now Webb County from José Antonio Navarro. At its peak as a slave trading center and later as an agricultural center, Laredo was one of Texas's largest cities. However, following Mexican-American War losses and $2 million in damages sustained by Anglo forces during the Battle at Palo Alto (1847), most African Americans left for good in the late 1840s or early 1850s as cotton farming increased in importance in Texans' economy. During Reconstruction era south Texas became an American-dominated society through land acquisition and violence by white Texans against black residents who hadevinced loyalty to Mexico rather than to America following Mexican independence from Spain. Cotton plantations were established throughout much of south Texas during this time; however local resistance led to few changes until many aspects of southern social life persisted unchanged well into the 20th century despite overwhelming white majority rule statewide beginning with World War II until Hispanic majorities occurred thereafter

Railroads arrived in Laredo in the late 1800s, making it one of America's most developed cities by 1900.

During the mid-20th century, Laredo underwent a transformation that included suburban development and an increase in manufacturing and service jobs. The population reached over 200,000 by 1990 but has since declined significantly due to factors such as economic struggles and crime rates.
