Laredo is a city in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas and the seat of Laredo County. The population was 822,591 as of 2015. It is one of the most populous cities in Mexico, and its metropolitan area has a population of 1 million people. The city is located on the banks of the Nueces River, about 60 miles (100 km) east-northeast of Mexico City. Laredo began as an agricultural outpost on the banks of the Trinity River in what is now Reynosa Municipality. In 1836, Antonio Bonilla de la Hoz founded a small town here called San Fernando de Laredo to serve as a junction for both trade with Texcoco and travelers coming downriver from Zacatecas laden with goods destined for New Orleans. By 1840, Laredo had become an important commercial center due to its location at one end of what was then known as Texas' "long road" south to Coahuila and north to Chihuahua. The first European settler in Laredo was José Francisco García from Monterrey who arrived in 1835; he set up a trading post on April 12, 1836 at where his name still stands today on First Street near Highways I-10/US 35 /Mexico State Route 10A (now Lavaca Street). A year later García married Concepción Jiménez and moved his post to what is now Old Bridge Road (now US 69) which served as their new home until 1830 when they built present day San Fernando Cathedral which remains standing today. In 1839 Samuel Houston took possession of Rancho La Esperanza and razed all but two buildings within 300 feet (91 m)of Mission Santa Clara de Assisi because he felt that it would be better if his new base were sited closer to commerce rather than spread out among numerous scattered villages along the Texas side of the Rio Grande. This gave birth to what are now Downtown Laredo proper - named after Sam Houston's father - while portions including mission buildings such as La Iglesia Católica Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes still stand today within walking distance or just minutes away by bus or bike from most businesses downtown including several large mall complexes like Sears & Kmart along MainStreetDowntownLared0
