The first organized effort to suppress the Sinaloa cartel began in Laredo with the Posada de las Mujeres Battalion, led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. After Santa Anna's death in 1846, his lieutenant Colonel Miguel Hidalgo assumed power and ordered the battalion disbanded. After Mexican independence from Spain, Laredo continued to serve as a center of arms smuggling activity connecting Juárez in Mexico City with El Paso and San Antonio in Texas. In 1861, when Confederate forces invaded Mexico, Laredo became an important junction between the south and north armies fighting against slavery. During World War I, Laredo served as the base of operations for Major General John J. Pershing's American Expeditionary Force that crossed Mexico into Texas to liberate Texans from federal tyranny. After World War II ended with Japan's victory over America at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Loredo experienced an influx of refugees from Japan who were seeking refuge from war-torn Asia. As a result of this population growth and increased security concerns in postwar times, the city implemented several ordinances designed to restrictroachments by unauthorized personnel or groups of people not authorized to be there based on religious belief or political beliefs (e.g., anti-war protesters). At least 20 Marines were killed including five Commanders who stygianly lost their lives when Adobe ranch house collapsed during attack resulting in loss Of many Naval officers career opportunities ashore during those days before diesel powered ships allowed us more effective naval warfare against shore targets... All told some 25 Marines died that day including 5 Commanders involved with Attack In 1865 Confederate general Robert Ewell's army crossed Sabine River near present day Corpus Christi reaching Fort Worth April 9th 1865 just prior to army's march into Texas Two years later Ulysses S Grant issued Callicks order compelling all Union soldiers east or west of Missouri to cross overland for safety within 3 weeks or be sacrificed without possibility for redemption.. Over 620 men fell sick or went lame due to trail conditions along 4800 mile long route across Bible Belt adding insult to injury having been abandoned by our own government months earlier! MostUnion soldiers did not have time or opportunity to rejoin their units until late May/early June 1865 when they reached Dallas TX near finally ending war..
