Navy gift history in Lancaster, Texas began with the purchase of a ship from the USS Constitution Museum in 1922. The museum had been donated by Commodore John F. Richardson, Jr. who served as the first Mayor of Lancaster and was also the owner of the USS Constitution. The ship was used for patrolling the Gulf Coast and participated in World War II as part of the Atlantic Fleet. After the war, she served as a floating artillery battery during peacetime before being scrapped in 1970. The second Navy gift to Lancaster came from Captain Charles Hargrave who served as Commanding Officer of HMS Warspite during World War II. The ship was purchased by City Councilmember James Waddell and brought to Lancaster on March 8, 1944 for display at Municipal Hall. It remained there until 1974 when it was moved to Corpus Christi, TX for use as a Naval Air Station Museum Shipyard Exhibit fleet boat which remain there today known as USS Lexington (CV-2). In 1987, Captain emeritus David Jervis presented an amended donation that includedUSS Anchorage (CVE-8) which he had acquired from scrapping yards in Singapore after her decommissioning in 1978 due to rot and water damage caused by Typhoon Alicia while serving with Task Group 62nd Fleet during Operation Coral Sea. She arrived at Corpus Christi Navy Yard on October 6th and restoration commenced immediately under Project Blue Water I following firefighting efforts following Hurricane Katrina on September 1st After years of effort by many individuals over time culminating with an erection ceremony on May 17th 2013 when Enterprise State Marina opened her new berth adjacent to Terminal 4 marked “The Nighthawks” this gift defined our community and waterfront presence fabricating more than 2,000 jobs across all four counties now enjoyed daily access & dining choices available within walking distance or just minutes away at terminals #3 & 4!
