The Lancaster Marine Museum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to exhibiting and promoting the maritime history of Lancaster County, Texas. Founded in 1984, the museum has collection that includes artifacts from both local and international maritime museums. The museum has an extensive library with over 100,000 items on display including books, periodicals, photographs, and posters related to the maritime industry. The marine gift history of Lancaster County dates back to 1881 when Captain James A. Lovell donated his dredge "Catherine" to the county as a means of providing employment for local fishermen. This donation was followed by other donations such as a mastodon tooth found at Joggins Cove in 1907 and a live octopus given by Mr. John Cockerill in 1913. In 1922, the county took possession of an old blockade runner named "Tower" which it converted into a resource center for fishing enthusiasts. The next year saw the foundation of the Marine Museum which currently occupies Tower. Since its establishment, the Marine Museum has collected numerous vessels including yachts, ferryboats, trawlers, submarines, and more. In addition to exhibits about local maritime culture and events (such as displays about fishing tournaments), the museum also features educational programs about shipbuilding techniques and associated equipment used during World War II; barge operations during various times periods; coastal erosion research; and American Neptune Week celebrations throughout summer months. Today's fleet includes many historic vessels from around the world that have been donated or borrowed by members of the community through open-air shows or Webinars available online or through face-to-face interactions with Maritime historians at our facility located on Tower Island within walking distance of all major east coast ports except New York City where there is no public boat harbor accessible from outside Manhattan
