On December 7th, 1941, the United States of America was attacked by Japan. The aircraft carriers USS Enterprise and USS Lexington were sunk and many of the crew lost their lives. In commemoration of this tragic event, the United States Air Force instituted a program called the "Lancaster Air Show." This airshow is now an annual event that celebrates American aviation heritage with performances by military and civilian pilots from all over the world. The first Lancaster show took place on October 5th, 1947. The airshow has since grown to be one of the most popular in the country. Over 1 million people have attended events at Lackland AFB since it began. Components of the U.S. Air Force have also participated in this event, such as Republic F-15 Fighters and C-17 Globemasters. One of Lancaster's most recognizable features is its iconic black-and-white checkerboard runway which can accommodate nearly every type of airplane known to man or machine ( Boeing 747s included).
