The Naval History Museum in Lakeway, Texas is one of the most important repositories of naval history in the United States. Naval America Inc., founded by Rear Admiral John W. Sellers, is headquartered at the museum. The USS Constitution (LPD-2) was donated to Naval America in 1984 by Captain James Ewing, who had served on her during World War II. She became part of the museum's collection after being sold to the Navy for $1 million in 1988. In 2001, USS Enterprise (CVN-70) was given to Naval America by its owner, General Dynamics Marine Engineering Division, because she had been out of service since 1967. The ship became part of the museum's collection after she was sold to General Dynamics for $5 million in 2006. Enterprise served with distinction during both World Wars I and II before she was decommissioned in 1969 and mothballed at Charleston Navy Yard until she was donated to NavalAmerica in 2001. Lakeway is a small town located in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1881 by John Fenton and his family. In 1902, the name was changed to Lakeway after its main watercourse—the Trinity River—joined with nearby Clear Fork Creek. By 1936, all of Midland County had been annexed by Houston, so Lakeway became a part of that city as well. The population peaked at 2,059 in 1950 but has since declined to 1,718 as of the 2010 census. Today most residents are retirees or people who work for local businesses that keep the town alive. There are also a few students attending schools inHouston; however these numbers have dwindled as well over time due to budget cuts and other factors outside of the control of locals. Lakeway, Texas is a town located in Wise County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. The town was founded by settlers in 1881 and named for General James H. Lake, who served as Commandant of the Texas Rangers from 1865 to 1869. The first store in the town was built on Main Street in 1881. In 1886, the first post office was established in the town and it continued to be used until 1909. In 1902, a sawmill was built in the community and it remained operational until 1954. The first school opened in 1908 and it continued to serve as a primary school until 1961 when it became an junior high school. The first Baptist Church also opened its doors in 1908 and continues to serve as a church today. In 1912, Lakeway residents voted to form their own government and they adopted a Constitution which established a Mayor/Clerk system with three regular councillors plus one ex-officio councillor who represented special interests within the community such as business or industry. There are no limits on how many people may vote for either of these positions although five people were needed for election back then (the current limit is two). In 1916, Lakeway residents voted to annex neighboring towns of New Braunfels into their municipality but this decision was overturned by the Texas Court of Appeals because annexation does not require local approval under state law In 1956, Lakesways citizens voted to become an incorporated city with full city rights In 1969, Lakeway voters passed an ordinance allowing liquor sales within its borders The final straw that led to secession from Wise County occurred on May 8th 1984 when homeowners began installing radar detectors inside their homes without consent from city officials
Lakeway was founded in 1853 by John C. Winchester and named for him because of its location on the I-10 corridor. In 1881, the town of Lakeway became a city when it was annexed by Austin. The city's first mayor was J.D. Peak.
