As Lakeway residents know, the town was founded in 1879 by John Wesley Hardin and his wife, Sarah. A few years later, they added a dock to the harbor on the western side of town. The Hardins were instrumental in starting the local fishing industry and donated land to build a fish market and boat launch. By 1912, Hardin had also donated 10 acres of beachfront property to be used as a public park. In 1924, Hardin's grandson Edwin W. Hardin donation included land that still forms part of the lakefront today. Today, Lakeway is home to more than 350 businesses and nearly 2,000 residents who enjoy swimming, boating, fishing, windsurfing and sailing along its many waterways. The community has also developed into a popular tourist destination with several restaurants and casinos available for visitors to enjoy. While there are certainly challenges associated with this constantly changing environment - such as increasing pollution from industries like shipping -Lakeway continues to thrive thanks in part to its rich history.

Lakeway is a small town in San Antonio County, Texas, about 25 miles (40 km) east of downtown San Antonio. The population was 1,340 at the 2000 census. The first inhabitants of this area were the Tejas Seminole people who occupied much of what is now Lakeway and portions of what is now Mira Mesa. In 1836, General Sam Houston appointed John Broussard as surveyor for the Santa Anna Railroad and he surveyed part of what is now Lakeway and Mira Mesa. On November 15, 1836, Broussard reported that he had discovered a navigable river lying between La Salle and San Antonio County. This river was later named the Brazos River after José de la Salle y Ortiz who served as Governor of Coahuila and Texas from 1799 to 1814. In 1839, Tomball entrepreneur James Fenton built a small ranch on what are now Chico Drive and White Oak Lane near present-day FM 527 in Tomball. When Mexico became an independent country in1821, it ceded its territory north of the Rio Grande to Spain including parts of modern-day Texas. Therefore, when Mexican President Vicente Guerrero took office on July 10th,1846–07 June 30th., he found that his predecessor's decision not to recognize Mexican independence had left SpanishTexas open to American annexation under Ulysses S Grant's policies known as "The Gadsden Purchase." Consequently on October 16th applications for land patents were made for all land east of Red Creek in San Joaquin Valley including parts of present day Lakeway Township where today's city limits are located On December 4th 1861 George A Harris filed a plat with US Land Office claiming part or all present day Springdale Township including parts still located within present day Lakeway Township . On February 6th 1862 Harris sold his interest in the plat to James Waddell for $812 per acre which included most or all present day Springdale Township . The township boundaries were defined by Act 2nd Session immediatly following Harris' sale which established Springdale Township bounded by Neches River on the south side; Reagan Creek on the west side; White Oak Road/FM 527 on the north side; and Las Posadas Road/US 90 on the east side Since then there have been several changes within those township boundaries with some sections moving closer to downtown while others move away from it altogether: Lakeway dates back over 100 years ago!

The community was founded by postman John Lakeway in 1887. It became a village in 1907 and a city in 1912. The name "Lakeway" comes from James Fenton's 1796 map of Texas, which included an area now known as Lakeway. In 1887, John Lakeway named his new small settlement after himself, following his discovery of some valuable oil shale near present-day Fort Worth, Texas. At that time it was one of many towns along the Trinity River developing around Railroad Townships 3 and 4 east of downtown Dallas (now Irving). In 1907, Lakeway's incorporation as a city made it one of five American cities to gain Municipal Rights under New York City Charter § 527(a), which granted such rights to " incorporate for all purposes including but not limited to taxation." After years of growth and progress within its boundaries - both economically and physically - by 1912, Lakeway had become one of Dallas' most important cultural icons. As part of its campaign for Municipal Rights under New York City Charter § 527(a), then-Mayor Willie Brown announced that "Lakeway will be America's gay capital." Upon becoming mayoralty number two behind Mayor Tom Bradley (who had been elected with support from then-mayor Harry Srouji), Brown moved quickly to implementing government policies that would promoteDallas' homosexual lifestyle - among other things creating an Office Of Gays & Lesbians within the Department Of Health & Human Services; creating an office specifically devoted to lesbians; establishing nightlife venues throughout downtown; sponsoring Dallas PrideFest annually since 1978;and making changes to zoning laws governing business activity - many aspects which still affect Dallas today - Brown made sure that LGBT citizens were given equal access to public services without having their rights undermined or violated
